# Welcome to Flying Free

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Original post:** [deanrush.net/blog/welcome-to-flying-free](https://deanrush.net/blog/welcome-to-flying-free)
**Archive month:** January 2015 · **Site category:** Human Resources

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's article** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned of HTML/image artifacts only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean invites readers into a journey framed by flight — preparation, clear air, and emergencies — without quoting a verse on the live page. The enrichment below does not invent a Dean citation; it supplies a biblical undercarriage for the metaphor he uses so a first-time reader can see why discipleship language fits an aviation series.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Life requires preparation before "takeoff" | Count the cost before building (Luke 14:28–30); train a child in the way (Proverbs 22:6) |
| Ordinary clear-air living still needs skill | Walk wisely, making the best use of time (Ephesians 5:15–16); run with endurance (Hebrews 12:1) |
| Emergencies will come aloft and in life | When you pass through waters, I will be with you (Isaiah 43:2); trials produce steadfastness (James 1:2–4) |
| Shared counsel strengthens the journey | Iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17); teach and admonish one another (Colossians 3:16) |

## Dean's article

### An invitation to fly together

![Flying Free mark from Dean's original post](https://deanrush.net/Portals/0/images/123abc/M_200px_modern.png)

My discussion for the next few articles will be focused on flight. I welcome you to share in a flight with me as we look forward to discussing how operating an airplane and life are similar. We must prepare for takeoff ( education and home life), how we will operate in clear air, and also how we can face emergencies in the air and in our lives.

There are many lessons to learn and I would welcome your input as we go through these discussions. In the next article we will discuss how to operate in an emergency.

Hope to see you there.

> **Scholar sidebar — Journey language in Scripture**
> Dean's aviation frame sits inside a long biblical habit of travel metaphors: walk (Micah 6:8), race (1 Corinthians 9:24–27), voyage through storm (Mark 4:35–41; Acts 27). Preparation before takeoff echoes Jesus' call to count the cost (Luke 14:28–33). Clear-air operations parallel wise daily walking (Ephesians 5:15–17). Emergencies parallel trials that test faith (1 Peter 1:6–7). The series invitation itself — "welcome your input" — matches mutual teaching in the body (Ephesians 4:15–16). Enrichment supplies that frame; Dean's short post remains a simple welcome, not a finished theology of crisis.

## Takeaways

1. **Series opener, not a full lesson.** Dean is inviting companions into several articles on flight-as-life.
2. **Three phases named.** Takeoff (education and home), clear-air operations, and emergencies structure the comparison.
3. **Airplane and life are similar.** The metaphor is practical: skills for the cockpit map to skills for living.
4. **Reader input is welcome.** He wants dialogue, not monologue.
5. **Emergencies come next.** The following article will address operating when things go wrong.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Join me for a short series that treats flying an airplane as a picture of preparing for life, living wisely in calm, and handling emergencies.

### Why use flight as the picture?
Because pilots must prepare, stay skilled in ordinary conditions, and rehearse emergency procedures — the same three demands Dean sees in education, home, work, and crisis. Scripture often teaches the same way with walk, race, and storm metaphors.

### Key verses to read with this post
- **Luke 14:28–30** — Count the cost before you build.
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Walk wisely; redeem the time.
- **Isaiah 43:2** — God with you through waters and fire.
- **James 1:2–4** — Trials produce steadfastness.
- **Hebrews 12:1–2** — Run with endurance, eyes on Jesus.
- **Proverbs 27:17** — Iron sharpens iron.
- **Mark 4:39–41** — Jesus in the storm with His disciples.

### A simple practice
Before the "next article" mindset of crisis hits: (1) list one takeoff preparation you are neglecting (skill, relationship, or spiritual habit), (2) name one clear-air routine that keeps you steady, (3) pray Isaiah 43:2 over one emergency you fear.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for questions such as: *What is Flying Free about? How does Dean compare aviation and life? Where should a new reader start?* Answers should treat this post as an invitation and point forward to his fuller crisis and faith counsel in later posts and the book.
