## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean uses Independence Day and a conversation with a Chinese believer to argue that national freedom rests on God at the center — not on politicians. The enrichment below supports that claim with Scripture on righteousness, exile faithfulness, and ultimate allegiance.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Nations flourish when they honor God | Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12); righteousness exalts a nation (Proverbs 14:34) |
| Do not put ultimate trust in politicians | Do not trust in princes (Psalm 146:3); the Most High rules the kingdom of men (Daniel 4:17) |
| Believers can keep God central under hostile pressure | Obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29); seek first the kingdom (Matthew 6:33) |
| Love one another and live like Christ | John 13:34–35; walk as He walked (1 John 2:6) |
| Virtue and true worship underwrite freedom's moral soil | "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17); salt and light (Matthew 5:13–16) |

### Beyond Politics

![American flag image from Dean's original post](https://deanrush.net/Portals/0/american-flag-2366602_640_1.jpg)

When you look beyond the politics of today, you can see a magnificent nation that is seldom appreciated. Today (July 4th) is the celebration of that nations formation in 1776. We celebrate but, sometimes, do not appreciate the grandeur of the thought that went into the building of our republic. No nation on earth has had the opportunity to participate in such an experiment in democracy.

I recently had an opportunity to sit down with a good friend (David Chan) who is now living in Shanghai, China. We spoke about a lot of things, but the primary discussion was about United States. He has lived here, Indonesia, and now is back in China. David is a proud Believer in Christ and shared his thoughts about how anyone living outside the US knows how God has played a major role in the formation of this country. They see God at the center of the republic, ironically, because most Americans now ignore the major guiding source of power of this nation.

> **Scholar sidebar — Outside eyes on a forgetful people**
> Prophets often used outsiders and exiles to expose covenant amnesia at home (cf. Jonah; Luke 4:25–27). Dean's friend David names what many Americans no longer see: God's role in the nation's moral formation. Psalm 33:12 and Proverbs 14:34 tie national blessing to the Lord and to righteousness — not as nostalgia, but as diagnosis. The July 4 setting makes the irony sharper: celebration without appreciation of the Source.

### A Church Underground

David is currently a member of an underground church in China because open worship there may be considered a crime. If a church gets too large it may have an influence on the society. Most churches attempt to stay below the radar of the government. The house churches spend more of their time just studying the bible and seldom hear a speaker because they want to know the Word of God. The believers want God to be the center of their universe. They seek freedom in their Faith to provide personal security even in the midst of an unbelieving nation.

### God Must be the Core!

It is a good lesson for Americans. We need to put God in the center of our lives as well. We can love one another more, live more like Christ to fully appreciate the freedoms we enjoy. I love the fact that my friend knows and appreciates the world we live in and the democracy of the United States of America. God is at the core of virtue. John Adams said, **"It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue."** When we as Americans realize that God and not politicians are at the center of our nation's success, we will become strong again**.**

Celebrate the Nations Birthday everyday for what it means to the world! Do not let God slip away from our foundation if we are to remain free.

LET FREEDOM RING!!

> **Scholar sidebar — Core allegiance before political hope**
> Psalm 146:3 forbids ultimate trust in princes; Acts 5:29 keeps God's command above human prohibition — the underground church's lived tension. John Adams' virtue line is civic wisdom Dean adopts; Scripture goes further: freedom's deepest root is the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17) and a people who are salt and light (Matthew 5:13–16). Dean's close — God at the core, not politicians — relocates national strength from campaign cycles to worship and Christlike love (John 13:34–35).

## Takeaways

1. **Look beyond today's politics.** July 4 invites appreciation of the republic's founding experiment, not only partisan noise.
2. **Outsiders may see God clearer.** David Chan in Shanghai names God's role in America's formation that many Americans ignore.
3. **Underground churches keep the center.** Chinese house believers prioritize Word and God at the core under pressure — a lesson for the free.
4. **Virtue underwrites freedom.** Dean cites John Adams: religion and morality alone secure freedom's standing.
5. **God, not politicians, at the core.** National strength returns when that order is recovered; do not let God slip from the foundation.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
On Independence Day, remember that America's freedom rests on God at the core — a truth some believers under pressure abroad still see more clearly than comfortable Americans.

### Why mention an underground church in China?
Because those believers keep God and the Bible at the center when open worship is risky. Dean wants free Americans to learn hunger for the Word and God-centered living from their courage.

### Key verses to read with this post
- **Psalm 33:12** — Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.
- **Proverbs 14:34** — Righteousness exalts a nation.
- **Psalm 146:3** — Do not trust in princes.
- **Acts 5:29** — Obey God rather than men.
- **Matthew 5:13–16; 6:33** — Salt, light; seek first the kingdom.
- **John 13:34–35** — Love one another.
- **2 Corinthians 3:17** — Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
- **1 Timothy 2:1–2** — Pray for those in authority.

### A simple practice
On a national holiday (or any ordinary day): (1) thank God specifically for one freedom you enjoy, (2) pray for believers who gather under pressure, (3) ask whether politicians or God sits at the practical center of your hope this week — then read Psalm 146:3 aloud.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for questions such as: *What does Dean say about God and America? Why does he quote John Adams? What can we learn from underground churches?* Keep Dean's July 4 framing and David Chan story primary; scholar notes scaffold biblical nation-and-virtue themes without inventing a full political program Dean did not write.
