Dean uses the story of a young man named Sam to show that when all conventional weapons are gone, faith remains the one weapon that can turn the tide. --- A few months ago I was working with a young man in his late teens who was very exasperated by his circumstance in life. He had lost his job and was about to lose his apartment and his car. He felt unable to go forward. As he said, “What is the use, because there nothing for me in the future?” He had determined there was no way out of his dilemma and was at the point of total frustration with life. I wanted to help him in any way possible because he had no family, no mentor, and most importantly, no hope. For the sake of this discussion I will call him “Sam.” I hired Sam to help me with some tasks that involved carrying tools and installing landscaping at my home. We had an opportunity to talk as we sweated in the summer sun, and he began to open up to me that he felt the world was coming down on him. Sam began to pour out his life to me, and it was amazing to see the world from his eyes. He had no cash, had dropped out of school, and had even survived at times by sleeping in his friend’s car. Sam was eighteen years old and had a record in juvenile court from an earlier offense when he was fourteen years old. His parents had kicked him out of the house when he was fifteen, so there had been very little support from his family. He painfully told me he felt his life was over. He could not go into the military because he had a record of court appearances and no high school diploma.
