# Airline Startup Persistence Pays Off

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 3:** Tell God Your Flight Plan for Life! Make Him Smile!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter teaches **filing a flight plan with God** through real crisis, not slogans. Section I recovery shows up in business form: no cash, thin experience, employees looking for pay — maintain control and keep working the plan. This lesson is the startup persistence story before Dean names God’s better on-call design.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s no-cash airline and hounding sales team illustrate diligence, stewardship of thin resources, and persistence that does not quit before the open door. Scripture backs work, wise urgency, and refusing despair when means look short.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Start with little capital still required responsibility to people | The laborer deserves his wages (Luke 10:7; 1 Timothy 5:18); provide for your household (1 Timothy 5:8) |
| Persistence in seeking work/business | Ask, seek, knock (Matthew 7:7–8); sluggard’s craving kills him because hands refuse to labor (Proverbs 21:25) |
| Team constantly calling; diligence finds a way | The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance (Proverbs 21:5); sow your seed in the morning (Ecclesiastes 11:6) |
| Holiday crisis became opportunity when majors could not respond | Make the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:16); the race is not always to the swift (Ecclesiastes 9:11) |
| Nothing insurmountable if resources are recognized | God will supply every need according to His riches (Philippians 4:19); five loaves still feed a crowd when offered (Matthew 14:17–20) |

## Dean's excerpt

### No cash, hard calls, Thanksgiving break

I remember the challenges I had in the small airline that two other men and I had started when I got out of the Air Force. We started the business with no cash for payroll or extra capital for operation. Financing came from a friend and pilot who I flew with in Vietnam. We started the airline with borrowed money and capital from a coal company we formed. Two other ex-Air Force officers were also involved and our only common aptitude was having no airline experience. Our intent was to fly a route around major Texas cities each night and carry freight from town to town. It was a tough business with little margin for error. Soon the operation grew to more than 100 employees and I was elected president. As president, I knew the employees would look to me to reward them for their work and they needed to be paid. When I looked around for an answer to the lack of cash, it became obvious that there had to be additional sales to bring in the necessary income to pay the bills and the employees.

We formed a team that constantly called our customers and potential customers to find business for our airplanes. The persistence finally paid off with a contract at Thanksgiving from one of the largest users of microchips who had to have an immediate shipment to avoid shutting down their factory during that four-day holiday weekend. Because we had been hounding them for business, they called us and asked if we could send two airplanes to California to meet a shipment of microchips sent from Asia and get them to Austin, Texas. The large airlines had cut back their schedules due to the holiday and could not respond. Our answer was a hearty “yes” when they called us, and we were rewarded by being paid double the normal price for the job (unexpected, but the flight saved the company—both ours and theirs). Nothing is insurmountable if you realize that resources are available.

> **Scholar sidebar — Diligence before the open door**
> Proverbs 21:5 and Matthew 7:7–8 underwrite the hounding sales rhythm — not magic, persistence. 1 Timothy 5:8 and Luke 10:7 underwrite Dean’s burden for payroll as moral weight, not mere ambition. Ephesians 5:16 underwrites the holiday window when majors stepped back. Philippians 4:19 and the feeding narratives underwrite “resources are available” without denying the no-cash start. Keep the story as testimony of maintained effort under thin margins.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Started thin.** No cash for payroll, borrowed money, almost no airline experience.
2. **Responsibility scaled.** Growth to 100+ employees made pay a non-negotiable problem.
3. **Sales as survival.** A team constantly called; persistence was the method.
4. **Thanksgiving break.** Microchip charter at double pay when large airlines could not respond.
5. **Resources exist.** Nothing is insurmountable once available resources are recognized and used.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
A no-cash freight airline survived by relentless sales persistence that won a Thanksgiving microchip charter at double pay when major carriers could not move the freight — proof that resources can open when you keep working the problem.

### Is this only a business story?
It is business testimony inside a recovery chapter: maintain control, keep the plan moving, refuse “insurmountable” as the last word.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 21:5** — Diligent plans.
- **Matthew 7:7–8** — Ask, seek, knock.
- **Ephesians 5:16** — Redeem the time / opportunity.
- **1 Timothy 5:8** — Provide for household.
- **Philippians 4:19** — God supplies need.
- **Ecclesiastes 11:6** — Sow in the morning.

### A simple practice
Name one “no cash / no margin” problem. List three resources already available (people, skills, relationships, inventory). Make one persistent contact this week the way Dean’s team kept calling.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What was Dean’s airline startup story? How did persistence pay off at Thanksgiving? What does “resources are available” mean?* Keep the microchip charter concrete.
