# DC-9 Spar Weekend Built a Team

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 3:** Tell God Your Flight Plan for Life! Make Him Smile!

## Context for the Reader

Still inside Chapter 3’s **flight-plan and recovery** frame, Dean shows Section I in corporate crisis: an FAA airworthiness directive could have ended the airline. Controlling the chaos of the moment — not panicking into shutdown — became the foundation of a real team. God used a weekend ordeal the original business plan never listed.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking. Aviation terms (AD, spar) stay as Dean uses them.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s weekend inspection story is many-members-one-body under pressure: a low-title idea, shared labor, meals, courage, and unity born in trial. Scripture honors overlooked counsel, mutual help, and good from what threatened harm.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Crisis looked like the end | We were so utterly burdened beyond strength we despaired of life itself (2 Corinthians 1:8–10) |
| Good idea came from an unexpected employee | Wisdom is found among the humble / many counselors (Proverbs 11:14; 15:22); God chose what is weak (1 Corinthians 1:27) |
| Whole company worked together through the weekend | Many members, one body (1 Corinthians 12:12–26); bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2) |
| Near-downfall became growth incentive and team | What was meant for evil, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20); all things work together for good for those who love God (Romans 8:28) |
| Controlling chaos established foundation for a great team | A wise man scales the city of the mighty (Proverbs 21:22); iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17) |

## Dean's excerpt

### AD on the spar — weekend under the wings

Once, when we had just purchased our first DC-9 airplanes and an aeromotive directive (AD) from the FAA arrived about DC-9s, the AD stated that there might be a crack in the spar that held the wings together. It was a big deal and also expensive. When we received the directive, some concluded that this was the end of the airline because we called every shop who worked on DC-9s around the country and were told the next available slot to have our bird looked at was in three to four weeks and the cost would be about $250,000 for the inspection. Talk about a downer. We didn’t have $250,000 and we sure couldn’t wait three to four weeks to get our airplane back in the air. One of our guys who worked in the parts room came into my office and knew the gravity of the situation (everyone in our company was aware of the problem). He said we could do the inspection ourselves over the weekend. At first I ignored his idea but then began to realize we had no choice. It was a wild idea, but after discussing it with our maintenance personnel they became excited about trying the long shot.

We began to assemble the employees and tell them about the problem, the circumstance, and the need for all of us to work through the weekend. One guy was building a house so he supplied the beams he was going to use in his new home to shore up the wings and allow us to lift the fuselage and separate the wings from the airplane. Another group of employees prepared meals for the maintenance guys who were performing the inspection, and yet others took out the interior and later replaced it when the spar was determined to be safe with no cracks. The airplane passed the inspection, the employees became a team, and the airline developed an esprit de corps that helped every employee become a salesman for our company.

What could have been the downfall of the airline became the incentive for us to grow and develop into a really viable corporation. Because of the idea of that young employee, we successfully corrected the problem, and gained an appreciation of one another that helped us grow and flourish in a very competitive industry. I left the organization a few years later to start another company, but I could never forget the satisfaction of seeing the team that developed from that weekend under pressure. Controlling the chaos of the moment actually proved to establish a foundation for a great team.

The original plans for building an airline certainly did not include the panic of that weekend maintenance ordeal, but God used the time to show us how to build a team in the company.

> **Scholar sidebar — Body under the wing**
> 1 Corinthians 12 underwrites parts-room voice, meal cooks, interior strippers, and maintenance as one body. Proverbs 15:22 underwrites finally hearing the “wild” counsel. Genesis 50:20 and Romans 8:28 underwrite downfall-turned-foundation without calling the AD pleasant. Dean’s last line is the chapter’s theology in story form: original plans omitted the ordeal; God used it to build a team. Keep AD/spar language intact — do not rewrite the aviation facts.

## Takeaways

1. **AD crisis.** Possible spar crack; shops wanted weeks and ~$250,000 they did not have.
2. **Overlooked idea.** Parts-room employee proposed DIY weekend inspection.
3. **Whole-company labor.** Beams, meals, interior, maintenance — airplane passed, no cracks.
4. **Esprit de corps.** Employees became a team; everyone a salesman.
5. **God used the ordeal.** Plans never included that panic weekend; controlling chaos founded the team.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When an FAA spar AD nearly grounded the DC-9 airline, a parts-room idea and a company-wide weekend inspection cleared the airplane, forged esprit de corps, and turned potential downfall into the foundation of a team — something God used their original plan never listed.

### Was ignoring safety the point?
No. They completed the required inspection — with their own people under pressure — and the spar was safe. The lesson is controlled response and shared labor, not cutting corners on airworthiness.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **1 Corinthians 12:12–26** — Many members, one body.
- **Proverbs 15:22** — Counsel.
- **Galatians 6:2** — Bear burdens.
- **Genesis 50:20** — Meant for good.
- **Romans 8:28** — Work together for good.
- **Proverbs 27:17** — Iron sharpens iron.

### A simple practice
In a current group crisis, list overlooked voices (like the parts-room idea) and one shared “weekend” style contribution each person can make without panicking into shutdown.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What was the DC-9 spar story? How did the weekend build a team? How did God use unplanned chaos?* Keep the narrative beats concrete.
