# God's On-Call Plan Beat Theirs

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 3:** Tell God Your Flight Plan for Life! Make Him Smile!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter’s title is **Tell God Your Flight Plan… Make Him Smile!** — human plans filed, God’s better plan welcomed. Section I still matters: they maintained control without panicking. This lesson is the theological hinge of the airline story: same persistence, different (and better) design from God.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean holds both truths: they planned and persisted *and* God supplied a better operational design. Scripture often joins diligent planning with the Lord’s superior establishing and unexpected provision.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Maintain control without panicking | Spirit of power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7); peace of God guards hearts (Philippians 4:6–7) |
| Persistence rewarded | Let us not grow weary of doing good (Galatians 6:9); ask, seek, knock (Matthew 7:7–8) |
| Human plan was reiterative routes | Heart of man plans his way (Proverbs 16:9a) |
| God provided a different, better plan | Lord establishes his steps (Proverbs 16:9b); many are the plans of a man, but the Lord’s purpose stands (Proverbs 19:21) |
| Better utilization — wiser than their first design | My thoughts are not your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8–9); God is able to do far more abundantly (Ephesians 3:20) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Their routes — God’s on-call design

We had been able to maintain control of the situation without panicking and the persistence was rewarded. Our plan was to succeed by flying reiterative routes around Texas on a daily basis. God provided an opportunity to succeed by becoming an on-call airline, which paid more per trip, required fewer personnel, and better utilized our resources. God had a different plan than ours but His plan worked much better than ours.

I could devote an entire book to discuss all that we encountered as we were getting that airline off the ground. It was a time of chaos and challenge. We had no money, very little knowledge about airlines, very little knowledge of how to run an airline, and almost no experience at anything other than flying airplanes.

My tenure at the helm of the little company was short but it was one of the most enlightening of my life. I learned more in three years of running that start-up airline than all the textbooks, graduate schools, and seminars I have encountered in a long life of corporate work. Because our most constant resource was originality (some might describe it as survival), we quickly learned to make the most of all available resources. If you called our company for information and I answered the phone (there were only three employees when we began), I would greet you, transfer you to the freight department, put you on hold, and answer the phone in a different pitch, and try to talk you into sending your freight on our airplanes.

> **Scholar sidebar — File the plan; welcome the better one**
> Proverbs 16:9 and 19:21 underwrite Dean’s hinge: plan honestly, then admit the Lord’s purpose can reroute you. Isaiah 55:8–9 and Ephesians 3:20 underwrite “much better than ours” without shaming the first Texas-route idea. 2 Timothy 1:7 underwrites the non-panic that kept them available for the better design. The multi-voice phone gag is originality under scarcity — still stewarding resources, not replacing God’s provision claim.

## Takeaways

1. **Control + persistence.** They did not panic; effort was rewarded.
2. **Their plan.** Reiterative nightly routes around Texas freight towns.
3. **God’s provision.** Opportunity to succeed as an on-call airline.
4. **Better metrics.** More pay per trip, fewer people, better resource use.
5. **Different and better.** God’s plan was not identical to theirs — and worked much better.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
They planned Texas freight loops and kept control without panic, but God opened a better on-call airline model that paid more and used people and planes more wisely than their original design.

### Does “God’s plan” cancel human planning?
No. Dean filed a plan and worked it; he then recognized God’s superior opportunity. Tell God your flight plan — and stay humble when He improves the routing.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 16:9** — Plan; Lord establishes steps.
- **Proverbs 19:21** — Lord’s purpose stands.
- **Isaiah 55:8–9** — Higher thoughts and ways.
- **Ephesians 3:20** — More abundantly.
- **Galatians 6:9** — Do not grow weary.
- **2 Timothy 1:7** — Self-control without panic.

### A simple practice
Write “Our plan” and “What God may be opening instead” for one live project. Keep working the first column without refusing evidence in the second.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How was God’s airline plan better? What is on-call vs reiterative routes? Did they still have to work?* Keep providence and persistence together.
