# Regain Control Before You Can Progress

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 3:** Tell God Your Flight Plan for Life! Make Him Smile!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter is about **flight plans with God** inside Section I’s maintain-control spine. Before new direction and destination talk can stick, Dean returns to the cockpit truth: without control, “progress” is only a wish while the aircraft descends.

This lesson is that sequence rule — regain control first; then fly toward a predetermined destination.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s aviation choice — recover or ride it in — maps to biblical self-control, deliberate turning, and finishing toward a real end rather than passive collapse.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Regain control before progress | Spirit of power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7); prepare minds for action (1 Peter 1:13) |
| How you handle choices shapes the future | Whatever one sows, that will he reap (Galatians 6:7); the prudent looks to the way (Proverbs 14:8, 15) |
| Doing nothing can ride the crisis into the ground | Faith without works is dead (James 2:17); sluggishness ends in want (Proverbs 6:9–11) |
| Choose a method of recovery and controlled flight | Return to me… and I will restore (Jeremiah 15:19; cf. Joel 2:12–13); strengthen what remains (Revelation 3:2) |
| Predetermined destination matters | I press on toward the goal (Philippians 3:14); run with endurance the race set before you (Hebrews 12:1–2) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Control first — then the destination

How do you control the crises in your life? When a crisis strikes you need to regain control before you can make progress. As in any emergency, there are choices, and how you handle those choices will probably determine your future. In an airplane that is in trouble your choices range from doing nothing and riding the bird into the ground or choosing a method of recovery and continuing to fly in a controlled manner. Obviously, the desired selection would be to regain control and get to a predetermined destination, but it is the pilot’s choice. The same holds true as you experience a problem in your life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Sequence is mercy**
> 2 Timothy 1:7 and 1 Peter 1:13 underwrite regaining a usable mind and will before “progress” talk. James 2:17 underwrites the danger of doing nothing. Philippians 3:14 and Hebrews 12:1–2 underwrite destination after recovery — not wandering forever in controlled circles. Dean’s bird-into-the-ground image is aviation bluntness: passivity is still a choice with a trajectory.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Control before progress.** Crisis recovery starts by regaining a flyable state.
2. **Choices shape futures.** Emergency handling probably determines what comes next.
3. **Two aircraft options.** Do nothing and ride it in — or recover and fly controlled.
4. **Desired selection.** Regain control and reach a predetermined destination.
5. **Pilot’s choice in life too.** The same fork applies when personal problems hit.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When crisis hits, regain control before you talk progress — choose recovery and controlled flight toward a destination instead of doing nothing and riding the problem into the ground.

### What if I feel I already lost control?
Dean’s point is the next choice: begin recovery method now. Control is regained, not only preserved.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **2 Timothy 1:7** — Self-control.
- **1 Peter 1:13** — Minds ready for action.
- **James 2:17** — Faith that acts.
- **Proverbs 14:15** — Prudent steps.
- **Philippians 3:14** — Press toward the goal.
- **Hebrews 12:1–2** — Run the race set before you.

### A simple practice
Write two columns: “Riding it in” (passive moves you are making) and “Recovery method” (one control action + one destination marker). Circle one recovery action for the next 24 hours.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Why regain control before progress? What does riding the bird into the ground mean in life? What is a predetermined destination in crisis?* Keep the aviation choice primary.
