# Tough Times Were Training Sessions

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 3:** Tell God Your Flight Plan for Life! Make Him Smile!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter pairs **flight planning with God** and Section I recovery: you do not only escape storms — you are formed by them. Before Dean tells the airline stories, he frames hardship as training for later main events.

This lesson is that backward glance: what felt insurmountable was often rehearsal.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s “training sessions” language fits biblical formation through trial — endurance, discipline, and readiness for heavier assignments — without calling every hardship trivial while you are in it.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Looking back reframes tough events as training | You do not understand now, but afterward you will (John 13:7); discipline yields peaceful fruit later (Hebrews 12:11) |
| Storms can make you tougher and smarter | Testing of faith produces steadfastness (James 1:2–4); suffering → endurance → character → hope (Romans 5:3–4) |
| Failure and illness can prepare for later tests | Joseph’s path prepared him to preserve life (Genesis 50:20); after you have suffered, God will restore and strengthen (1 Peter 5:10) |
| Present hardness may be preparation, not only pain | God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:5–7); light momentary affliction prepares eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17) |
| Main event still ahead needs prior formation | If you have raced with men and they wore you out, how will you compete with horses? (Jeremiah 12:5) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Storms as rehearsal

As I have grown older, it has been interesting to look back and see how some of the events in my life that I deemed very tough and insurmountable were, quite often, just training sessions for what was coming in the future. I became tougher and smarter from those storms. I know now that those tough times when I was required to bite down hard and take guff that came with failure or illness were just preparations for the main event to come. Those events were preparing me to handle real tests later in life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Afterward naming**
> John 13:7 and Hebrews 12:11 underwrite retrospect: training is often named *after* the bruise. James 1:2–4 and Romans 5:3–4 underwrite toughness and character without romanticizing the pain mid-storm. Jeremiah 12:5 underwrites “main event later” — smaller races prepare larger ones. Dean is not minimizing present crisis; he is offering a category for past storms once you can look back.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Retrospect reframes.** Age can show “insurmountable” seasons as training.
2. **Tougher and smarter.** Storms formed capacity, not only scars.
3. **Bite down.** Failure and illness demanded grit that later tests required.
4. **Main event ahead.** Prior hardness prepared him for heavier real tests.
5. **Category for survivors.** Present pain may one day be seen as preparation.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Looking back, many seasons he called tough and insurmountable were training sessions that made him tougher and smarter for later main-event tests.

### Does that mean I should enjoy the storm now?
No. Dean speaks from afterward. In the storm, maintain control and seek God; later you may name the training.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 1:2–4** — Testing → steadfastness.
- **Romans 5:3–4** — Suffering → hope.
- **Hebrews 12:5–11** — Discipline’s later fruit.
- **John 13:7** — Understanding afterward.
- **1 Peter 5:10** — Restore and strengthen after suffering.
- **Jeremiah 12:5** — Men → horses.

### A simple practice
List one past storm you survived. Write: (1) what felt insurmountable then; (2) one skill or toughness it built; (3) one later test that skill helped.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How does Dean reframe tough times? What is a “training session” storm? What is the main event?* Keep retrospect distinct from mid-crisis counsel.
