# Deuteronomy 31:6 as Instrument

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 4:** Check Your Instruments – Find a Reliable Reference
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter introduces **instrument flying for the soul**. When life removes all visual references (the “horizon” disappears), you must have trusted instruments — in Dean’s case, Scripture — that tell you the truth when your feelings and circumstances lie. The story of young Dean visiting his grandfather before Vietnam and receiving Deuteronomy 31:6 is one of the most moving passages in the book. That single verse became his personal attitude indicator for the rest of his life.

This lesson is the gift itself: Bible to the porch, a memorization request, Deuteronomy 31:6 in full, and Dean’s testimony that the simple verse carried him through the war zone and many later challenges.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Grandpa does not offer a pep talk; he hands Dean Scripture to internalize. The verse itself stacks courage commands on God’s presence and non-abandonment — the biblical pattern for fear before enemies and unknowns.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Grandpa answered fear with the Bible | Your word is a lamp to my feet (Psalm 119:105); man lives by every word from God’s mouth (Deuteronomy 8:3) |
| Memorize the verse | Bind them on your heart (Proverbs 3:3); store up the word within (Psalm 119:11) |
| Be strong and courageous | Be strong and courageous (Joshua 1:9); wait for the Lord; be strong (Psalm 27:14) |
| Do not be afraid or terrified because of them | Fear not, for I am with you (Isaiah 41:10); the Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1) |
| He will never leave you nor forsake you | I will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5); I am with you always (Matthew 28:20) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Bible on the porch

I really didn’t know what was coming in the next year or whether I would again have the opportunity to sit and receive this wisdom from my grandfather. Grandpa looked at me after I answered his question. He then stood up and walked into his house. He came back out to the porch with his Bible and requested that I memorize a verse. I followed his instruction and that verse has helped me handle a number of challenging times in life. It also certainly helped me get through my time in the war zone. Since those months in combat and the years into maturity, the verse has helped me overcome many other adversities as well. It is a simple verse found in Deuteronomy 31:6. It says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

> **Scholar sidebar — One verse as attitude indicator**
> Psalm 119:105 and Deuteronomy 8:3 frame Grandpa’s move: word before pep. Proverbs 3:3 and Psalm 119:11 underwrite *memorize* — instruments must be available when the book is not in hand. Joshua 1:9 and Psalm 27:14 echo the same courage charge Moses and God give leaders facing “them.” Isaiah 41:10 and Psalm 27:1 ground “do not fear” in God’s presence, not personality. Hebrews 13:5 and Matthew 28:20 seal “never leave nor forsake” into the New Testament. Dean’s “simple verse” is the chapter’s named instrument — check it when the horizon is gone.

## Takeaways

1. **Fear met with Scripture.** Grandpa’s next move after “Yes” was the Bible, not empty reassurance.
2. **Memorize on purpose.** The request was instruction; Dean followed it.
3. **Simple is portable.** One verse traveled into the war zone and decades beyond.
4. **Presence is the engine.** Strength and courage rest on “God goes with you,” not self-hype.
5. **Non-forsaking is the guarantee.** The instrument’s reliability is God’s character.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
After he admitted fear, his grandfather brought a Bible to the porch and had him memorize Deuteronomy 31:6 — a verse that carried him through combat and later adversities.

### Why call it an instrument?
Because when feelings and circumstances lie, a trusted reference tells true attitude: God with you, not forsaking you — so strength and courage have a basis.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Deuteronomy 31:6** — The instrument itself.
- **Psalm 119:105** — Word as lamp.
- **Psalm 119:11** — Word stored in the heart.
- **Joshua 1:9** — Strong and courageous; God with you.
- **Isaiah 41:10** — Fear not; I am with you.
- **Psalm 27:1** — Lord as stronghold; whom shall I fear?
- **Hebrews 13:5** — Never leave nor forsake.
- **Matthew 28:20** — I am with you always.

### A simple practice
Memorize Deuteronomy 31:6 this week (write it, say it morning and night, put it on a card in wallet or phone lock screen). When fear spikes, recite it slowly three times before you decide or speak.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What verse did Grandpa give Dean? What does Deuteronomy 31:6 say? Why memorize?* Keep the porch scene and full verse primary.
