# Verse Through Combat, Cancer, and Business

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 4:** Check Your Instruments – Find a Reliable Reference

## Context for the Reader

This chapter introduces **instrument flying for the soul**. When life removes all visual references (the “horizon” disappears), you must have trusted instruments — in Dean’s case, Scripture — that tell you the truth when your feelings and circumstances lie. The story of young Dean visiting his grandfather before Vietnam and receiving Deuteronomy 31:6 is one of the most moving passages in the book. That single verse became his personal attitude indicator for the rest of his life.

This lesson is the application log: same verse under gunfire, under grief for fellow pilots, under cancer, under business ruin — and the conclusion that God was right there in every circumstance.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean does not keep Deuteronomy 31:6 locked to Vietnam. He proves an instrument by flying it through multiple weather systems. Scripture shows God’s presence spanning war, death of peers, sickness, and material loss — one Lord, many valleys.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Memorize it; use it widely | This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth (Joshua 1:8); teach them diligently (Deuteronomy 6:6–7) |
| Applied when shot at in combat | Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4); He is my refuge and fortress (Psalm 91:2) |
| Fellow pilots lost; fear of not making it home | The Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18); precious is the death of His saints (Psalm 116:15) |
| Fighting cancer; concern about recovery | I am the Lord who heals you (Exodus 15:26); pray over the sick (James 5:14–15) |
| Businesses in a mess; could not save them | Naked I came; the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away (Job 1:21); do not lay up treasures only on earth (Matthew 6:19–21) |
| God was right there in every circumstance | I will be with him in trouble (Psalm 91:15); nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38–39) |

## Dean's excerpt

### One verse, many storms

That little verse has had many applications for me and I suggest you also memorize it. It applied when I was being shot at in combat. It applied when I was very concerned about just making it home in one piece after some of my fellow pilots had lost their lives. It applied later in life when I was fighting cancer and concerned about recovery. It also applied in my life when my businesses were in a mess and it became apparent that I could not save them. That Bible verse has applied to so many circumstances in my life that it has been apparent that God was right there. The verse made me understand that God has been there, no matter what the circumstance, and has instilled in me the fact that I should remain strong and courageous because He (God Himself) is with me.

> **Scholar sidebar — Prove the instrument in real weather**
> Joshua 1:8 and Deuteronomy 6:6–7 underwrite Dean’s “memorize it” invitation. Psalm 23:4 and Psalm 91:2 walk with him under fire. Psalm 34:18 and Psalm 116:15 hold grief when peers die. Exodus 15:26 and James 5:14–15 sit with cancer without denying medical fight. Job 1:21 and Matthew 6:19–21 reframe business collapse under God’s hand, not only under Dean’s rescue skill. Psalm 91:15 and Romans 8:38–39 seal the refrain: God right there, love not separated. The applications list is the flight log that certifies the attitude indicator.

## Takeaways

1. **Invite others to the same instrument.** Dean suggests you memorize it too.
2. **Combat fire.** The verse worked when he was being shot at.
3. **Grief and survival fear.** It worked after fellow pilots died and homecoming felt uncertain.
4. **Body and business.** Cancer recovery fears and unsalvageable companies both fell under the same word.
5. **Conclusion: God was there.** Many circumstances made presence *apparent*; courage rests on God Himself with you.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Deuteronomy 31:6 applied across combat, lost fellow pilots, cancer, and business failure — proving God was right there and calling him to stay strong and courageous.

### Why list so many arenas?
To stop you from filing the verse under “war story only.” Instruments that only work in one weather band are not enough for a whole life.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Deuteronomy 31:6** — Strength, courage, presence, non-forsaking.
- **Joshua 1:8** — Word not departing from mouth.
- **Psalm 23:4** — Valley of the shadow; God with me.
- **Psalm 34:18** — Near to the brokenhearted.
- **Psalm 91:15** — With him in trouble.
- **James 5:14–15** — Prayer in sickness.
- **Job 1:21** — Lord gives and takes away.
- **Romans 8:38–39** — Nothing separates from God’s love.

### A simple practice
Draw four boxes labeled Combat / Loss / Health / Work. In each, write one fear you carry (or have carried). Under each, copy the same line: “The Lord your God goes with you.” Pray Deuteronomy 31:6 once over the full page.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Where did Dean use Deuteronomy 31:6 later in life? Did it only help in Vietnam? What about cancer and business?* Keep the application list and “God was right there” primary.
