# Bad to Worse — or Miracle?

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 6:** Look for a Safe Place to Land – When Things Are Bad, Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter demonstrates the **third emergency procedure** in action: when you cannot stay in the air, you must find a **safe place to land** — even if far from the original plan. After cancer, betrayal, debt, firing, bankruptcy, and the **Michigan** caravan, Dean closes by questioning the “bad to worse” storyline. The landing zone is not only a job in Grand Rapids; it is recognizing family, improving health, work with a future, and God as the only adequate explanation — miracle language for a forced landing that became gift.

This lesson is the final look around: were things worse, or was God providing a miracle?

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Perspective can convert apparent descent into recognized providence. Scripture calls the people of God to recount mercies, credit the Lord, and name His works without other rivals for the explanation.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| “Bad to worse” may misread the story | You meant evil; God meant it for good (Genesis 50:20); all things work together for good (Romans 8:28) |
| Family together under pressure is mercy | God sets the lonely in families (Psalm 68:6); how good when brothers dwell in unity (Psalm 133:1) |
| Health improving is gift | I am the Lord who heals you (Exodus 15:26); praise the Lord… who heals all your diseases (Psalm 103:2–3) |
| Work with a future is provision | The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me (Psalm 138:8); He who began a good work will complete it (Philippians 1:6) |
| Only God explains the miracle | This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes (Psalm 118:23); every good gift is from above (James 1:17) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Looking around — miracle

Things seemed to have gone from bad to worse but—were they? When we began looking around, we realized, the family was together, my health was improving, I had a job with the potential to establish a good solid future, and God was providing it all. There was no other explanation for what, to us, was a miracle. Suddenly, we determined that only God could have been the reason for what was happening.

> **Scholar sidebar — Recount the landing, not only the dive**
> Genesis 50:20 and Romans 8:28 allow reframing without denying evil done along the way. Psalm 68:6, Psalm 103:2–3, and Psalm 138:8 name family, healing, and purpose as mercies. Psalm 118:23 and James 1:17 underwrite “only God” as explanation. Keep Dean’s question mark after “were they?” — the miracle is concluded after looking around, not before the free-fall.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Question the spiral story.** “Bad to worse” felt true until they looked again.
2. **Family together.** Unity under pressure counted as evidence, not background noise.
3. **Health improving.** Recovery was part of the miracle inventory.
4. **Job with future.** Not flashy altitude — solid potential, still gift.
5. **Only God.** No rival explanation fit; miracle language was their honest conclusion.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
What felt like bad-to-worse was reframed when they looked around — family together, health improving, a job with future potential, God providing it all — and they concluded only God could explain the miracle.

### Why end the safe-landing chapter here?
Because the third emergency procedure is complete only when you recognize the strip under you as God’s provision, not merely as reduced circumstances.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Genesis 50:20** — God meant it for good.
- **Romans 8:28** — Works for good.
- **Psalm 118:23** — Lord’s doing; marvelous.
- **Psalm 103:2–3** — Heals and benefits.
- **Psalm 138:8** — Fulfills purpose.
- **Philippians 1:6** — Completes the good work.
- **James 1:17** — Every good gift from above.

### A simple practice
Write four columns: Family / Health / Work / God. Put one honest fact in each from this week. Pray: “Only You explain the good I could not manufacture.”

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Did things only get worse for Dean? What did he count as miracle? Why only God as explanation?* Keep the closing paragraph primary.
