# Deuteronomy Returns; Turmoil in Rearview

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 6:** Look for a Safe Place to Land – When Things Are Bad, Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter demonstrates the **third emergency procedure** in action: when you cannot stay in the air, you must find a **safe place to land** — even if far from the original plan. The **Michigan** road is the landing approach; this lesson is the instrument check mid-approach — faith shoving doubts, Deuteronomy’s presence promise, Grandpa’s courage words returning.

This lesson is interior flight: doubts pushed back, God with him facing enemies, recovery credited to God, strength-alone proven insufficient, future and “be strong and courageous” re-forming.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

The same instrument from Chapter 4 returns under new weather. Scripture joins God’s nearness in enemy-pressure, strength not of self, and courage that looks forward.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Faith shoves doubts into the background | Take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5); I believe; help my unbelief (Mark 9:24) |
| Deuteronomy: God with you facing enemies | Be strong and courageous… He will never leave you (Deuteronomy 31:6); if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31) |
| Recovery credited to God, not self | He heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147:3); by His wounds you have been healed (1 Peter 2:24) |
| Own strength without faith is not enough | Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit (Zechariah 4:6); apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5) |
| Future hope and “be strong and courageous” return | Forgetting what lies behind, straining forward (Philippians 3:13–14); be strong and let your heart take courage (Psalm 27:14) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Faith, Deuteronomy, and the future

Somehow faith was taking hold of any doubts I had and shoving them into the background. Just as that verse in Deuteronomy stated, He was with me, “…even in the face of my enemies….” God was working me through this ordeal. I had begun my slow recovery from cancer because of God and not anything I was doing. Vickie and I were doing our best to maintain control of a life that seemed to have flown out of control. Without faith I had relied totally on my own strength and it was now obvious that my strength was not enough without faith.

I was beginning to sense someway, someday, we would try to laugh at this experience. I suddenly began thinking about the future and not relating to the past. Faith and hope began creeping back into my thought processes. Those words that my grandfather told me to learn so many years ago began to re-form in my mind: “…Be strong and courageous….”

> **Scholar sidebar — Instrument returns on final approach**
> Deuteronomy 31:6 and Romans 8:31 ground “with me… enemies.” Zechariah 4:6 and John 15:5 underwrite strength-not-enough-alone. Philippians 3:13–14 and Psalm 27:14 frame future-facing courage. 2 Corinthians 10:5 and Mark 9:24 allow faith wrestling doubts rather than erasing them instantly. Keep Dean’s partial quotes and Grandpa link; they tie Chapter 6 to the Chapter 4 instrument.

## Takeaways

1. **Faith shoves doubts.** Not polite suggestion — active displacement of doubt.
2. **Deuteronomy online.** God with him facing enemies; working him through the ordeal.
3. **God-credited recovery.** Slow cancer improvement attributed to God, not self-effort.
4. **Control needs faith.** Maintaining control without faith had already failed.
5. **Courage re-forms.** Future thinking returns; Grandpa’s memorized charge comes back.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Faith shoved his doubts back, Deuteronomy’s “God with you” held in the ordeal, recovery was credited to God, self-strength proved insufficient, and Grandpa’s “be strong and courageous” re-formed as he began to face the future.

### Why bring Deuteronomy back here?
Because the reliable instrument from the porch is checked again when the landing zone (Michigan) is under the wheels and enemies have been real.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Deuteronomy 31:6** — Strong, courageous; God with you; never forsake.
- **Romans 8:31** — If God is for us.
- **Zechariah 4:6** — Not by might or power.
- **John 15:5** — Apart from me, nothing.
- **Philippians 3:13–14** — Forward, not only past.
- **Psalm 27:14** — Be strong; take courage.
- **2 Corinthians 10:5** — Take thoughts captive.

### A simple practice
Recite Deuteronomy 31:6 once, then name one doubt out loud and say: “Background — not cockpit.” Write one future-facing sentence that does not deny the past.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How did Deuteronomy return in Chapter 6? What did faith do to Dean’s doubts? What Grandpa words re-formed?* Keep the faith/Deuteronomy paragraphs primary.
