# Fly Free of Encumbrances

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 6:** Look for a Safe Place to Land – When Things Are Bad, Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter demonstrates the **third emergency procedure** in action: when you cannot stay in the air, you must find a **safe place to land** — even if far from the original plan. On the **Michigan** approach, Dean names what falls away with the forced landing: encumbrances and material security that once blocked sight of what mattered — bankruptcy included, with later full repayment and new light.

This lesson is freedom through loss: hope changing the view, friends’ pity, bankruptcy to separate from key-man insurance, pride hit, glimmer of hope answered, faith turning into reality.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Losing props can free the heart. Scripture holds integrity in debt, the danger of riches as master, pride under discipline, and hope that becomes sight without denying the toughness of the path.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Encumbrances blocked what really mattered | The cares of the world and deceitfulness of riches choke the word (Mark 4:19); throw off every weight (Hebrews 12:1) |
| Hope changes the view | We rejoice in hope (Romans 12:12); against hope Abraham believed in hope (Romans 4:18) |
| Material security disappears | Do not lay up treasures on earth (Matthew 6:19–20); life does not consist in possessions (Luke 12:15) |
| Bankruptcy hardship; later repay everyone | The wicked borrow and do not repay (Psalm 37:21); owe no one anything except love (Romans 13:8) |
| Tough on pride; new light; faith becomes reality | God opposes the proud, gives grace to the humble (James 4:6); faith is the substance of things hoped for (Hebrews 11:1) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Free of what held them

What could we do to make things turn out better this time? We began to realize we were flying free of those encumbrances that had held us so firmly in the past, encumbrances that somehow had enticed us to stop looking at what was really important. Funny how the view changes when you begin to see some hope. We were realizing that we could fly free into a promising future.

Some friends told Vickie and me they felt sorry for us as they saw all of our material security disappear with the business. We were forced to declare bankruptcy to separate from the key man life insurance policy with the partner. Over the years following, we were blessed to be able to pay back everyone, including the bank, all the money involved in the bankruptcy. It was, however, a very tough time on my pride, but there seemed be a new light in front of us.

Vickie and I realized this was a great opportunity to begin anew. It was a freedom to break from the upheaval we had experienced in the last two and a half years. We began to look forward to a new future. We had prayed for a glimmer of hope and now, somehow, we were seeing the reality of an answer. Faith was turning into reality.

> **Scholar sidebar — Light after the props fall**
> Hebrews 12:1 and Mark 4:19 frame encumbrances and choked sight. Matthew 6:19–20 and Luke 12:15 underwrite lost material security. Psalm 37:21 and Romans 13:8 honor the later full repayment Dean reports. James 4:6 names pride’s wound; Hebrews 11:1 and Romans 12:12 support hope becoming reality. Keep bankruptcy and repayment both in view — neither alone is the whole lesson.

## Takeaways

1. **Encumbrances named.** Past weights had stopped them from seeing what mattered.
2. **Hope changes optics.** A little hope reframed the future as flyable.
3. **Friends’ pity.** Material security’s disappearance looked like pure loss from outside.
4. **Bankruptcy, then repayment.** Forced separation from key-man policy; later everyone paid, including the bank.
5. **Pride hit; light ahead.** Begin anew; prayed-for glimmer becomes faith-as-reality.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Stripped of material security and forced into bankruptcy, Dean and Vickie found they could fly free of past encumbrances, endure a hit to pride, later repay everyone, and see prayed-for hope become real light.

### Why pair bankruptcy with “fly free”?
Because the safe landing can require dropping cargo that was also a chain — loss is real, and so is the freedom that follows when faith turns hope into lived answer.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Hebrews 12:1** — Lay aside every weight.
- **Mark 4:19** — Cares and riches choke.
- **Matthew 6:19–20** — Treasures in heaven.
- **Luke 12:15** — Life not in possessions.
- **Psalm 37:21** — Righteous repay.
- **James 4:6** — Grace to the humble.
- **Hebrews 11:1** — Faith and things hoped for.

### A simple practice
List one “encumbrance” (status, stuff, image) that has blocked what matters. Pray once: “Lord, if this must fall for me to land clean, give humility and integrity in how I handle it.”

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Did Dean go bankrupt? Did he repay the bank? What encumbrances did he mean?* Keep the encumbrance/bankruptcy paragraphs primary.
