# Hospital Loan Papers

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 6:** Look for a Safe Place to Land – When Things Are Bad, Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter demonstrates the **third emergency procedure** in action: when you cannot stay in the air, you must find a **safe place to land** — even if that landing zone is far from where you originally planned to go. Health and business collapse together; **Michigan** later becomes the landing zone of reduced salary and renewed purpose.

This lesson is the hospital signature: papers brought during surgery that looked like care, then the missing collateral that drove the hole deeper than cancer alone.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Apparent help can hide liability. Scripture warns about hasty pledges, hidden harm, and trouble that outruns what you thought was already the worst.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Signing under pressure can bind you to others’ choices | Do not be one who puts up security for debts (Proverbs 22:26–27); the borrower is servant to the lender (Proverbs 22:7) |
| What looks like care may not be | A flattering mouth works ruin (Proverbs 26:28); wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15) |
| Missing collateral deepens the hole | The wicked borrow and do not repay (Psalm 37:21); better not to vow than to vow and not pay (Ecclesiastes 5:5) |
| Life can grow more rigorous than the first crisis | Do not say, “Why were the old days better?” (Ecclesiastes 7:10); sufficient to the day is its trouble (Matthew 6:34) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Papers at the hospital

I had thought it was great when my partner brought some loan papers up to the hospital for me to sign during one of the surgeries. I surmised he really cared about me and still acknowledged my ability to contribute to the business. There was a problem, however, because some of the collateral for those loans had been sold. The missing collateral would later drive me even farther into a hole both psychologically and physically. How could life become more rigorous than all I was experiencing with the cancer? I quickly discovered how ridiculous that statement really was.

> **Scholar sidebar — Signature is not the same as care**
> Proverbs 22:7 and 22:26–27 frame debt and surety as real bonds, not mere paperwork. Proverbs 26:28 and Matthew 7:15 caution reading “he brought papers” as pure kindness. Psalm 37:21 and Ecclesiastes 5:5 touch integrity around what was pledged. Keep Dean’s hospital scene intact; the next lesson names the “out of trust” threat explicitly.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Hospital signature.** Loan papers arrived during surgery — vulnerability met paperwork.
2. **First reading was care.** Dean thought the partner still valued his contribution.
3. **Collateral already gone.** Sold collateral made the papers a deeper trap.
4. **Hole widened.** Psychological and physical cost followed the missing security.
5. **Worse than cancer alone.** He learned the question “how could it get harder?” was premature.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
His partner brought loan papers to the hospital during surgery; Dean first saw care, then discovered sold collateral that drove him deeper into the hole than cancer alone.

### Why does this matter for “safe place to land”?
Because the free-fall is not only medical — financial entanglement while weak is part of why the aircraft cannot stay up and a distant landing zone becomes necessary.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 22:7** — Borrower and lender.
- **Proverbs 22:26–27** — Caution on surety.
- **Proverbs 26:28** — Flattery and ruin.
- **Psalm 37:21** — Borrowing and repayment.
- **Ecclesiastes 5:5** — Vows and payment.
- **Matthew 6:34** — Today’s trouble is enough.

### A simple practice
Before you sign anything under stress this month, wait one clear-headed day (or ask a trusted friend to read it with you). Write: “What am I pledging, and what is already gone?”

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What did the partner bring to the hospital? What was wrong with the loans? How did missing collateral affect Dean?* Keep the hospital-papers paragraph primary.
