# First Instructor: Precise, Gentle — Never Been in Combat

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 7:** Regain Control – One Step at a Time
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces the second emergency procedure: **Analyze the situation / Take proper action**. Proper action must match the real environment. Dean contrasts a polished range procedure with combat truth — analysis that only works in calm air fails when the enemy is shooting.

This lesson isolates the first instructor: precise, gentle, successful on the range, and never combat-tested.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s warning is about untested counsel that still “works” in easy conditions. Scripture distinguishes appearance of wisdom from wisdom proven in trial, and warns against teachers who have not walked the hard path they describe.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Procedure can look simple and always “work” on the range | There is a way that seems right to a man (Proverbs 14:12); test everything; hold fast what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21) |
| Success without combat experience is incomplete preparation | Not many of you should become teachers (James 3:1); by their fruits you will know them (Matthew 7:16–20) |
| Later revelation exposes the gap | The simple believes everything; the prudent gives thought to his steps (Proverbs 14:15); wisdom is proved right by her deeds (Matthew 11:19) |
| Analyze whether the teacher’s world matches yours | The wise hear and increase in learning (Proverbs 1:5); examine everything carefully (cf. Acts 17:11) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Precise, gentle — and untested in combat

I was not initially assigned to Ken, and the first instructor I had for the training told us to raise the nose of the airplane very precisely to ten degrees above the horizon, kick the rudder gently in the direction of the target, pull the nose of the airplane down to the target until we could see it through the pipper (firing scope) and then pull the trigger. It all seemed very simple and precise and I always put the rocket on target as it left the wing of my airplane. There was only one problem that became evident later in the school: my instructor had never been in combat.

> **Scholar sidebar — Range truth is not theater truth**
> Proverbs 14:12 and 14:15 underwrite the danger of a way that “seems right” and always hits on the range. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 and Acts 17:11 underwrite testing counsel against reality. James 3:1 and Matthew 7:16–20 underwrite sobriety about who teaches. Dean is not mocking precision; he is exposing untested precision as a false friend when analyze-and-act must happen under fire.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Polished steps can still mislead.** Ten degrees, gentle rudder, pipper, trigger — clean and incomplete.
2. **Range success feels like mastery.** Rockets on target reinforced the wrong confidence.
3. **Assignment matters.** Dean was not first with Ken; the comfortable path came first.
4. **Combat experience is a different credential.** The later-revealed gap was never-been-in-combat.
5. **Second procedure needs true context.** Proper action depends on which world the procedure was built for.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
His first instructor taught a precise, gentle roll-in that always scored on the range — but that instructor had never been in combat.

### Why is “never been in combat” the problem?
Because analyze-and-act in theater requires procedures shaped by enemy fire, not only by a calm Gulf target ship.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 14:12** — A way that seems right.
- **Proverbs 14:15** — Prudent thought to steps.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:21** — Test everything.
- **James 3:1** — Sobriety about teachers.
- **Matthew 7:16–20** — Know by fruit.
- **Proverbs 1:5** — Hear and increase in learning.

### A simple practice
List one area where your “range procedure” always works in easy conditions (meetings, money, conflict). Ask: has this counsel been tested in real stress — and by whom?

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What did the first instructor teach? Why was never-been-in-combat a problem? How does untested precision fail the second emergency procedure?* Keep the range-procedure paragraph primary.
