# Ken at Hurlburt — The Instructor Who Had Just Been There

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces the second emergency procedure: **Analyze the situation / Take proper action**. Dean’s later sequential recovery over Laos depends on an instructor who had already lived combat and refused to teach theater as a sterile range exercise.

This lesson introduces that man — Ken at Hurlburt — and why Dean still names him as someone to whom he owes his life.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Ken embodies tested counsel: the teacher who has walked the path and speaks with seriousness, not performance. Scripture honors instructors who have proven the way and pass on what keeps others alive.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| An instructor who challenges you for real battle | The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise (Proverbs 15:31); faithful are the wounds of a friend (Proverbs 27:6) |
| Preparation assigned before the mission | Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23); prepare your minds for action (1 Peter 1:13) |
| Quiet seriousness over flashy teaching | When words are many, transgression is not lacking (Proverbs 10:19); let your yes be yes (Matthew 5:37) |
| Life owed to those who equipped you | Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you (Hebrews 13:7); what you have heard… entrust to faithful people (2 Timothy 2:2) |

## Dean's excerpt

### “Ken” at Special Operations Training School

I owe my life to many people, but one person stands out because he was an instructor pilot who helped me prepare for combat by challenging me to prepare for real battle situations. I was assigned to the Special Operations Training School at Hurlburt Field in Florida as I prepared for my mission in Vietnam. He taught me how to fly as a forward air controller (FAC). I will call him “Ken.” Ken had just returned from a tour in Southeast Asia and his assignment was to prepare me and several other aviators who were going to a similar special operations assignment. Ken was very quiet but also very serious in his approach to teaching us what to do in combat. One of the important lessons in the school was learning how to fire the weapons on the airplane.

> **Scholar sidebar — Tested teachers before hard theaters**
> Proverbs 15:31 and 27:6 underwrite the kind of challenge Dean received — life-giving, not cruel. Colossians 3:23 and 1 Peter 1:13 underwrite serious preparation before Vietnam. Hebrews 13:7 and 2 Timothy 2:2 underwrite gratitude for those who equip the next wave. Ken’s quiet seriousness is a character note: volume is not the same as authority.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Name your debt.** Dean still marks one instructor as life-saving among many helpers.
2. **Real battle, not theater only.** Ken challenged preparation for actual combat situations.
3. **Hurlburt before Vietnam.** Special operations FAC training was the assigned bridge.
4. **Combat returnee as teacher.** Fresh Southeast Asia experience shaped what Ken taught.
5. **Quiet and serious.** Approach mattered — gravity without noise.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
At Hurlburt Field a quiet, serious instructor nicknamed Ken — just back from Southeast Asia — prepared Dean and others for special-operations combat as forward air controllers.

### Why does Ken matter to “one step at a time”?
Because the sequential recovery plan Dean later used was planted by someone who had already seen what combat does to neat procedures.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 15:31** — Life-giving reproof.
- **Proverbs 27:6** — Faithful wounds of a friend.
- **1 Peter 1:13** — Minds prepared for action.
- **Hebrews 13:7** — Remember those who led and spoke.
- **2 Timothy 2:2** — Entrust what you learned to faithful people.
- **Colossians 3:23** — Work heartily as for the Lord.

### A simple practice
Write the name of one “Ken” in your story — a quiet serious teacher who stretched you for real conditions. Thank God for them; if living, send one concrete note of thanks.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Who was Ken? Where did he train Dean? Why does Dean say he owes Ken his life?* Keep the Hurlburt introduction paragraph primary.
