# Pilots Who Know Their Aircraft

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 7:** Regain Control – One Step at a Time
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces the second emergency procedure: **Analyze the situation / Take proper action**. Dean shows that recovery is rarely instantaneous — it is sequential right action under fear and chaos. The chapter’s combat arc (Ken’s training, then a spin over Laos) proves that preparation before the fight decides whether analysis can still work when everything is spinning.

This lesson is the opening filter: whom you trust beside you, and whether they already know the machine.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s preference for prepared wingmen is wisdom about readiness, not swagger. Scripture praises knowing your tools, counting cost before battle, and skill that does not panic when the day turns hard.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Know every aspect of the systems you fly | The prudent gives thought to his steps (Proverbs 14:15); by wise guidance you can wage your war (Proverbs 24:6) |
| React automatically when something goes wrong | Prepare your minds for action (1 Peter 1:13); train yourself for godliness (1 Timothy 4:7–8) |
| Spend time preparing for battle and the abnormal | Which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first count the cost (Luke 14:28–30); the horse is made ready for the day of battle (Proverbs 21:31) |
| Practice builds confidence and better skill under fire | Whatever you do, work heartily (Colossians 3:23); a wise man is full of strength (Proverbs 24:5) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Whom you want beside you in heavy combat

In Vietnam, I quickly learned there were some guys I wanted to fly with and others whom I steered away from in heavy combat.

The guys whom I wanted to be in battle with were the ones who knew every aspect of the airplane they were flying and all of its systems. The guys who took time to know the capability of their aircraft could react automatically when something went wrong. Those pilots were the ones who spent time preparing for the battle. They were ready for the abnormal situations and unforeseen problems. The pilots who prepared and practiced developed the confidence and skills to do a better job in battle.

> **Scholar sidebar — Readiness is love of neighbor under fire**
> Proverbs 14:15 and 24:5–6 underwrite knowing systems and seeking skill before the fight. Luke 14:28–30 underwrites counting cost in training, not improvising competence mid-crisis. 1 Peter 1:13 keeps the mind prepared so reaction can be automatic without being reckless. Dean’s filter is pastoral as well as tactical: unprepared wingmen endanger more than themselves.

## Takeaways

1. **Choose prepared company.** In heavy combat Dean steered toward those who already knew the airplane.
2. **Systems knowledge is survival.** Knowing every aspect of the aircraft enables automatic reaction when something fails.
3. **Prepare for the abnormal.** Unforeseen problems are expected by those who trained for them.
4. **Practice builds confidence.** Skill under fire is developed before the mission, not wished into being.
5. **Second procedure needs first fuel.** Analysis and proper action require people (and habits) already ready.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
In combat he wanted wingmen who knew every system on the airplane, had prepared for abnormal situations, and could react automatically when something went wrong.

### Why start Chapter 7 here?
Because sequential recovery only works if someone already knows what “proper action” looks like before the spin begins.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 14:15** — Prudent thought to steps.
- **Proverbs 24:5–6** — Wisdom, strength, and guidance for war.
- **Luke 14:28–30** — Count the cost before the build (or the fight).
- **1 Peter 1:13** — Minds prepared for action.
- **1 Timothy 4:7–8** — Train yourself.
- **Proverbs 21:31** — The horse made ready for battle.

### A simple practice
Name one “system” in your life you only half-know (budget, health baseline, key relationship pattern). Spend thirty focused minutes learning it before the next crisis forces the lesson.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Whom did Dean want beside him in combat? Why does systems knowledge matter before analyze-and-act? How does preparation serve the second emergency procedure?* Keep the wingman-selection paragraph primary.
