# Preparation, One Step at a Time, and Faith in God

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 7:** Regain Control – One Step at a Time
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces the second emergency procedure: **Analyze the situation / Take proper action**. Dean’s Laos recovery was not magic — it was sequential steps completed under fire, planted by uncomfortable training, and framed at the end by faith in God. Recovery from problems, no matter how large, should include Him.

This lesson is the chapter close: debt to Ken, one-step recovery, preparation’s reward, and faith.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean joins human preparation to divine strength without collapsing either. Scripture commands readiness, honors those who equip us, calls for patient step-wise faithfulness, and insists that crisis recovery belong under God’s care.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Indebted to the one who went further in training | Remember your leaders… and imitate their faith (Hebrews 13:7); owe no one anything, except to love each other (Romans 13:8) |
| Recover uncontrolled situations one step at a time | The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter (Proverbs 4:18); do not despise small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10) |
| Preparation for emergency yields reward when reality hits | The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord (Proverbs 21:31); teach us to number our days (Psalm 90:12) |
| Destined to be challenged — faith supplies strength | In the world you will have tribulation (John 16:33); I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13) |
| Recovery should include God | Trust in the Lord with all your heart (Proverbs 3:5–6); cast all your anxieties on Him (1 Peter 5:7) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Indebted, prepared, one step, with God

My poor navigator was quite bruised and worn by the whole affair but always kept his seat belt a little tighter when we flew together on future missions. I also became forever indebted to that instructor back in Florida who cared enough to go a little further in my training. He had equipped me to recover from an uncontrolled situation one step at a time. He had prepared me for that moment when we encountered the unexpected emergency and he had provided the knowledge of how to recover. He had helped me build faith in a plan that would get me back to base alive. The discomfort I had experienced in Ken’s realistic training for combat proved to be an enduring lesson for survival. Preparation for emergency situations provides great reward when the real situation arrives.

We are destined to be challenged, and if we prepare for challenges we can get through them by correcting the problem one step at a time. If we use our faith in God we will have the strength to handle any emergency. Recovery from problems, no matter how large, should include God.

> **Scholar sidebar — Steps under God, not steps instead of God**
> Hebrews 13:7 underwrites lasting debt to equippers like Ken. Proverbs 4:18 and Zechariah 4:10 underwrite sequential, brightening recovery rather than instant spectacle. Proverbs 21:31 holds both poles: make the horse ready *and* confess victory belongs to the Lord. John 16:33 and Philippians 4:13 underwrite destined challenge plus strength in God. Dean’s last line is non-negotiable for this deposit: recovery should include God — the second emergency procedure is never godless technique alone.

## Takeaways

1. **Tightened belts after bruises.** The navigator learned; future missions changed.
2. **Forever indebted.** Ken cared enough to go further than the syllabus.
3. **One step at a time.** That was the recovery method for uncontrolled situations.
4. **Discomfort was survival training.** Realistic stretch paid off in the real emergency.
5. **Prepare, step, faith, include God.** Destined challenges meet sequential correction under God’s strength.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Ken’s uncomfortable training equipped Dean to recover one step at a time — and when life challenges us, we prepare, correct sequentially, lean on faith in God, and include Him in every recovery.

### How does this close the second emergency procedure?
Analyze and take proper action is not a single leap; it is completed steps under pressure, powered by preparation and faith.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Hebrews 13:7** — Remember leaders; imitate faith.
- **Proverbs 4:18** — Path brighter step by step.
- **Proverbs 21:31** — Ready the horse; victory is the Lord’s.
- **John 16:33** — Tribulation certain; take heart.
- **Philippians 4:13** — Strength through Him.
- **Proverbs 3:5–6** — Trust in the Lord.
- **1 Peter 5:7** — Cast anxieties on Him.

### A simple practice
Write a three-line recovery card for one live problem: (1) Prepare — what I rehearse. (2) One next step I will complete fully. (3) How I explicitly include God (prayer, Scripture, trusted believers) before nightfall.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What did Dean learn from Ken long-term? What does one step at a time mean? Why must recovery include God?* Keep the closing paragraphs primary — this is the chapter thesis for Asker.
