# Unlock the Harness — Complete Step One

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 7:** Regain Control – One Step at a Time
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces the second emergency procedure: **Analyze the situation / Take proper action**. Sequential recovery fails when a step is only half-done. Dean’s Laos spin “wasn’t working” until analysis spotted the blocker: an unlocked harness putting a body on the yoke so the recovery pull could never finish.

This lesson is the chapter’s hinge — complete step one, then the airplane recovers as trained.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s save is finished obedience under pressure: see the real obstruction, take the extra proper action, complete what was incomplete. Scripture ties deliverance to finishing the work, removing what hinders, and not stopping at almost.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Suddenly see what was blocking the recovery | Open his eyes that he may see (2 Kings 6:17); the prudent gives thought to his steps (Proverbs 14:15) |
| Incomplete step one keeps you in the deadly cycle | A little leaven leavens the whole lump (Galatians 5:9); be doers… not hearers only who deceive themselves (James 1:22) |
| Take one more step — the proper action analysis requires | Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10); run with endurance the race (Hebrews 12:1) |
| Recovery can be sweet once the blocker is cleared | He drew me up from the pit… set my feet upon a rock (Psalm 40:2); you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32) |

## Dean's excerpt

### The harness on the yoke

I pushed the yoke of the airplane forward one more time, just as Ken had said, when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw my burly flying partner fly forward in his seat. His shoulder harness was not locked and he was flying forward into the control yoke as I was jerking it back. When I took the next action to recover from the dive and pulled the yoke in front of him back rapidly, it was hitting my partner squarely in the chest. After striking him I was not getting the yoke back far enough to slow the dive and regain flying speed. As a result we were heading right back into another spin. I suddenly realized the spin had persisted because I hadn’t fully completed step one. If we were going to get out of the situation alive I had to take one more step. I reached over, grabbed my navigator’s shoulder strap and pulled him back against his seat as I pulled the yoke back towards my stomach and the airplane gently flew out of the dive. It recovered as sweetly as if it had done it on its own. The airplane recovered exactly as described in textbooks, and more importantly, as in the training Ken had provided.

> **Scholar sidebar — Almost-done is not done**
> Proverbs 14:15 and 2 Kings 6:17 underwrite corner-of-the-eye analysis that finally sees the blocker. James 1:22 and Ecclesiastes 9:10 underwrite completing the action, not repeating a half-pull. Hebrews 12:1 underwrite laying aside what entangles — here, literally unlocking the path of the yoke. Psalm 40:2 matches Dean’s sweet recovery once step one is finished. The second emergency procedure is not “try hard”; it is analyze until proper action is complete.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Look again mid-sequence.** Corner-of-the-eye vision found the real problem.
2. **Unlocked harness = blocker.** Body on the yoke prevented full recovery travel.
3. **Incomplete step one.** The spin persisted because the first recovery action was never finished.
4. **One more proper action.** Pull partner back; pull yoke to the stomach.
5. **Then it matches the book.** Sweet recovery — textbook and Ken’s training both true.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
The spin continued because step one was incomplete — the navigator’s unlocked harness blocked the yoke — until Dean pulled him back, finished the pull, and the airplane recovered as trained.

### What is the life transfer?
When recovery “isn’t working,” ask what step is only half-done or physically blocked — not whether the whole plan was worthless.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 14:15** — Prudent thought to steps.
- **2 Kings 6:17** — Eyes opened to see.
- **James 1:22** — Be doers.
- **Ecclesiastes 9:10** — Do with your might.
- **Hebrews 12:1** — Lay aside entanglement; run with endurance.
- **Psalm 40:2** — Set feet on a rock.

### A simple practice
Pick one stuck recovery. Write: (1) What step I think I’m doing. (2) What might be blocking full completion. (3) The single “pull him back” action that finishes step one today.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Why didn’t Ken’s recovery work at first? What blocked the yoke? What does complete step one mean for life crises?* Keep the harness-and-recovery paragraph primary — this is the chapter’s climax beat.
