# Beyond Syllabus Saves Lives

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 8:** Know Your Cockpit – Be Prepared for Crisis
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 8’s preparation theme peaks in Ken’s refusal to stop at the **approved standard syllabus**. He gave Dean knowledge of what would happen in theater that others never received. Peers who took the easier Hurlburt path later struggled because they had **not been tested in training**. Dean generalizes: testing we endure in training can save our lives — or at least prepare us for difficult situations that follow through life.

This lesson is the case for extra, honest testing before the real emergency grades you.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture treats testing as formative, not merely punitive — and warns against unfinished preparation that looks complete on paper.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Going beyond minimum requirements can save a life | Whoever hears these words and does them builds on rock (Matthew 7:24–25); be doers, not hearers only (James 1:22) |
| Easy paths leave people untested and unready | Shallow soil withers when the sun rises (Matthew 13:5–6, 20–21); no root in themselves |
| Testing in the training season prepares for later trials | Testing of faith produces steadfastness (James 1:2–4); proven character through endurance (Romans 5:3–5) |
| Knowledge others lack may be mercy you received | To whom much is given, much will be required (Luke 12:48); stir up the gift through intentional training (2 Timothy 1:6) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Extra training — and the cost of the easy path

Ken went way beyond the approved standard syllabus and he provided me knowledge of what was going to happen when I arrived in theater that others did not receive. Some of the guys got through the preparation training at Hurlburt in a much easier manner but then had difficulty in combat because they had not been tested during training. The testing we endure in training can save our lives, or at least prepare us for the difficult situations that follow us through life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Tested before the sun rises**
> Matthew 13’s shallow soil looked alive until heat came. James 1 and Romans 5 refuse to treat testing as wasted pain — steadfastness and character grow there. Ken’s beyond-syllabus work is pastoral aviation: better a hard check in Florida than a first failure over Laos. Preparation that only clears paperwork is not preparation that clears combat.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Syllabus is floor, not ceiling.** Ken went *way beyond* the approved standard.
2. **Theater foresight is a gift.** Dean received knowledge others simply did not get.
3. **Easy graduation can hide unreadiness.** Some finished Hurlburt comfortably and then struggled.
4. **Untested = unready.** The gap was missing tests during training.
5. **Life application.** Training tests can save lives and prepare us for later difficulty.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Do not settle for the easiest pass through preparation — extra testing now can save you when the real difficulty arrives.

### Why beyond the syllabus?
Because the approved minimum did not include everything combat would demand. Ken loved students enough to add what paperwork omitted.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 1:2–4** — Testing produces steadfastness.
- **Romans 5:3–5** — Endurance, character, hope.
- **Matthew 7:24–25** — Hear and do; build on rock.
- **James 1:22** — Doers, not hearers only.
- **Matthew 13:5–6, 20–21** — Shallow root fails in heat.
- **Luke 12:48** — Much given, much required.
- **2 Timothy 1:6** — Fan into flame the gift.

### A simple practice
Choose one area where you have “passed” on minimum effort (spiritual disciplines, emergency savings, hard conversation skills). Add one beyond-syllabus drill this month that actually tests you — timed, scored, or witnessed by a trusted wingman.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Is going beyond requirements prideful or wise? Why did easy training fail some pilots? How should churches test people before sending them?* Keep Dean’s beyond-syllabus thesis primary.
