# Emergency Proves the Prep: Laos Spin

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Months after Hurlburt, over **Laos**, 37 mm fire and an airburst put Dean’s aircraft into a spin **exactly as Ken had predicted**. Dean ran the trained recovery. It seemed to fail — until he saw the navigator flying forward on an unlocked harness, blocking full yoke travel. Completing the blocked step brought a **textbook recovery**. Chapter 8’s preparation thesis is proven in blood and altitude: what you practice becomes what you reach for — and you must finish every step.

This lesson is the crisis payoff of knowing the cockpit and training beyond comfort.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture values completed obedience and clear-headed action under pressure — not half-steps abandoned when fear rises. Preparation shows its worth when the trial arrives.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Trained response is what you reach for in emergency | I have hidden Your word in my heart (Psalm 119:11); bind them on your heart — when you walk they will lead you (Proverbs 6:20–22) |
| Do not abandon the plan when it seems to fail mid-crisis | Let us not grow weary of doing good (Galatians 6:9); run with endurance (Hebrews 12:1–2) |
| Find and correct the blocked step | First take the log out of your own eye (Matthew 7:5) as clarity pattern; examine yourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5); remove the obstacle to full obedience |
| One-step-at-a-time recovery | The word is a lamp to feet and path (Psalm 119:105); sufficient to the day is its trouble — sequential trust (Matthew 6:34) |
| Deliverance can look “textbook” after full compliance | Commit your way; He will act (Psalm 37:5); trust in the Lord and He will make paths straight (Proverbs 3:5–6) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Spin over Laos — complete every step

A few months after the training in Florida, I was in the battle zone and out over Laos with a navigator who sat in the seat beside me in the airplane. His job was to plot a course to get us safely to and from the target, keep a keen eye outside for anti-aircraft bursts targeting our airplane, and help keep me alive as we traversed enemy territory. My job was to fly the airplane and get us home in one piece. This particular day I had a guy with me who shall remain nameless, but he may be described as a large barrel-chested Irishman with a furious temper. We were being shot at with 37 mm anti-aircraft guns, and when an airburst exploded under our airplane the aircraft almost immediately entered into a spin just as Ken had predicted. I did just what Ken had taught me. I pushed forward on the yoke to lower the nose and gain airspeed and then rapidly pulled the yoke back to recover from the ensuing dive. I did that three times and the trees on the mountains below were growing much too distinct as we spun towards the earth. The recovery was not working. Ken’s one step at a time plan for recovery was failing.

I pushed the yoke of the airplane forward one more time, just as Ken had said, when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw my burly flying partner fly forward in his seat. His shoulder harness was not locked and he was flying forward into the control yoke as I was jerking it back. When I took the next action to recover from the dive and pulled the yoke in front of him back rapidly, it was hitting my partner squarely in the chest. After striking him I was not getting the yoke back far enough to slow the dive and regain flying speed. As a result we were heading right back into another spin. I suddenly realized the spin had persisted because I hadn’t fully completed step one. If we were going to get out of the situation alive I had to take one more step. I reached over, grabbed my navigator’s shoulder strap and pulled him back against his seat as I pulled the yoke back towards my stomach and the airplane gently flew out of the dive. It recovered as sweetly as if it had done it on its own. The airplane recovered exactly as described in textbooks, and more importantly, as in the training Ken had provided.

> **Scholar sidebar — Finish the step**
> Psalm 119:11 and Proverbs 6:20–22 picture truth stored ahead of time so it leads under pressure. Dean’s “Ken’s plan was failing” moment was not a failed syllabus — it was an incomplete step. Galatians 6:9’s endurance and Hebrews 12’s long race fit the fourth push on the yoke. Preparation is proven when you keep the procedure and clear the blockage instead of inventing panic.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Ken predicted the spin.** Theater matched training; warped-reality prep was not theory.
2. **Automatic reach for trained steps.** Dean did what Ken taught under fire.
3. **Seeming failure needs diagnosis.** Trees rising did not mean “abandon the plan.”
4. **Blocked step one.** Unlocked harness prevented full yoke travel — the spin persisted for a reason.
5. **Complete the procedure.** Pull partner back + full pull = textbook recovery; emergency proved the prep.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When crisis hits, run the prepared steps — and if recovery stalls, find the blocked step and finish it rather than discarding the plan.

### Why the harness detail?
Because real emergencies often fail for a concrete, almost embarrassing reason. Preparation includes eyes open for the obstruction, not only memorized motions.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 119:11** — Word hidden for the moment of need.
- **Proverbs 6:20–22** — Bound truth leads when you walk.
- **Galatians 6:9** — Do not grow weary.
- **Hebrews 12:1–2** — Run with endurance.
- **Psalm 119:105** — Lamp to feet and path.
- **Proverbs 3:5–6** — Trust; straight paths.
- **Psalm 37:5** — Commit your way; He acts.

### A simple practice
Write a three-step recovery for one likely crisis (medical scare, financial shock, relational blow-up). Add a fourth line: *If step one seems to fail, what blockage should I check?* Review it once so the Laos lesson is not only a war story.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does one-step-at-a-time recovery look like? Why keep Ken’s plan when it seems to fail? How did preparation show up over Laos?* Keep the full emergency narrative primary; the next lesson draws the faith conclusion.
