# Know Every System

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 8:** Know Your Cockpit – Be Prepared for Crisis
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter drives home **preparation before the crisis arrives**. Dean’s Vietnam cockpit becomes the classroom: knowing every system of the aircraft is not trivia — it is the difference between automatic life-saving reaction and freeze when something goes wrong. The memorable Ken story later in the chapter will show what realistic training looks like; this lesson opens the door with the basic rule: **know your cockpit**.

This lesson is the triage of companions: in heavy combat Dean steered toward pilots who had done the unglamorous work of learning the airplane completely.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s “know every system” is readiness, not anxiety. Scripture praises watchful skill, wise preparation, and a mind that does not scramble for basics after the storm has already begun.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Choose companions who know their craft thoroughly | Walk with the wise and become wise (Proverbs 13:20); two are better than one when one falls (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10) |
| Deep knowledge produces automatic reaction under stress | A wise man is strong; knowledge increases strength (Proverbs 24:5); the ant prepares food in summer (Proverbs 6:6–8) |
| Be ready for abnormal and unforeseen problems | Be sober-minded and watchful (1 Peter 5:8); the prudent sees danger and hides himself (Proverbs 22:3) |
| Preparation belongs to the calm before battle | Count the cost before building (Luke 14:28–31); put on the whole armor *before* the evil day (Ephesians 6:13) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Know the airplane — then react without delay

In Vietnam, I quickly learned there were some guys I wanted to fly with and others whom I steered away from in heavy combat.

The guys whom I wanted to be in battle with were the ones who knew every aspect of the airplane they were flying and all of its systems. The guys who took time to know the capability of their aircraft could react automatically when something went wrong. Those pilots were the ones who spent time preparing for the battle. They were ready for the abnormal situations and unforeseen problems.

> **Scholar sidebar — Knowledge that acts**
> Proverbs treats knowledge as strength you carry into the day of trouble, not a certificate you display in peacetime (Proverbs 24:5). Ephesians 6:13 assumes the armor is already on when the evil day arrives. Dean’s Vietnam filter is pastoral for ordinary life: know the “systems” of your calling, marriage, finances, and faith *before* the abnormal hour — so reaction is practiced, not invented mid-spin.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Companion filter.** Dean sorted combat partners by who actually knew the airplane — not by charm or rank alone.
2. **Systems knowledge = automatic reaction.** Capability studied in advance becomes muscle memory when something fails.
3. **Preparation is time spent.** The trusted pilots “spent time preparing for the battle,” not hoping talent would cover gaps.
4. **Abnormal is expected.** Ready pilots planned for unforeseen problems, not only textbook sorties.
5. **Cockpit first.** Chapter 8’s thesis starts here: know your cockpit so crisis does not find you ignorant.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
In crisis you want people — and personal habits — that already know every critical system, so response is automatic instead of scrambled.

### Why the hard standard?
Because heavy combat (and heavy life) exposes shallow familiarity. Dean will not romanticize unprepared confidence.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 24:5** — Knowledge increases strength.
- **Proverbs 22:3** — The prudent sees danger and acts.
- **Proverbs 6:6–8** — Prepare in the season of calm.
- **Ephesians 6:13** — Armor on before the evil day.
- **1 Peter 5:8** — Sober watchfulness.
- **Luke 14:28–31** — Count the cost before the fight.
- **Ecclesiastes 4:9–10** — Strong companions when one falls.

### A simple practice
List five “systems” in your current season (health, budget, key relationships, work process, spiritual disciplines). For each, write one concrete fact or procedure you still do not know well enough to use under stress. Schedule one hour this week to close the worst gap.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for questions such as: *What does “know your cockpit” mean outside aviation? How do I prepare without living in fear? Who should I trust in a crisis?* Keep Dean’s systems-knowledge standard primary; use scholar notes for biblical readiness without rewriting his combat filter.
