# Train for Warped Reality

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 8:** Know Your Cockpit – Be Prepared for Crisis

## Context for the Reader

Ken’s preparation went beyond weapons tactics. He insisted Dean train for **aircraft that were no longer perfect** — pulled, jerked, bent, shot up, repaired, wings warped, controls slow, ready to spin. He taught spin recovery **with full armament load**, because that configuration often caused the spin. Chapter 8’s cockpit knowledge includes training for **warped reality**, not only factory-fresh conditions.

This lesson is realism as love: prepare for the machine and the world as they actually are under fire.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Biblical wisdom refuses fantasy environments. We train for a fallen world, weak flesh, and costly obedience — not for a syllabus of unbroken ease.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Perfect conditions will be rare when the fight is real | In the world you will have tribulation (John 16:33); the days are evil (Ephesians 5:16) |
| Damage, repair, and limitation are normal in the theater | We have this treasure in jars of clay (2 Corinthians 4:7); the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41) |
| Train for the configuration that actually fails | Be sober and watchful (1 Peter 5:8); the prudent sees danger and prepares (Proverbs 22:3) |
| Extra realism in training is mercy | Whoever is wise listens to counsel (Proverbs 12:15); teach them the difference between holy and common — applied readiness (cf. Ezekiel 44:23 as discernment pattern) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Bent, shot up, full load — then recover

Ken also told me during the training at Hurlburt Field that the perfectly rigged aircraft we were learning to fly would be rare in combat. The airplanes in the combat theater had been pulled, jerked, bent, shot up, and repaired to the point that their wings might be warped, and their controls slow to respond. He said they would spin on a dime because of their warped condition. He therefore taught me how to recover from a spin when the airplane’s wings were fully loaded with armament, because that was normally the configuration which precipitated the entry into a spin.

> **Scholar sidebar — Train for clay jars**
> 2 Corinthians 4:7 refuses the myth of unbreakable vessels. Ken’s warped-wing briefing is the aviation version: do not memorize only the perfect jet. John 16:33 and Proverbs 22:3 agree — tribulation and danger are foreseeable enough to prepare for. Full-load spin practice is love with a checklist: train the recovery you will actually need when reality is bent.

## Takeaways

1. **Perfect jets are school luxury.** Combat birds were already damaged and repaired.
2. **Warped means different handling.** Slow controls and sudden spins were predicted, not surprises.
3. **Train the failure mode.** Full armament load was the configuration that precipitated spins — so Ken trained there.
4. **Reality over syllabus cosmetics.** Preparation matches the theater you will enter.
5. **Later Laos will prove it.** Dean’s emergency will look exactly like Ken’s prediction.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Do not only practice for perfect conditions — train recoveries for the bent, loaded, slow-to-respond reality you will actually face.

### Why full-load spin practice?
Because the dangerous configuration is exactly when you most need the skill. Ken refused to leave that gap for combat to teach.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **John 16:33** — Tribulation in the world.
- **2 Corinthians 4:7** — Treasure in jars of clay.
- **Proverbs 22:3** — Prudent sees danger and acts.
- **1 Peter 5:8** — Sober and watchful.
- **Matthew 26:41** — Watch and pray; flesh is weak.
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Walk wisely; days are evil.
- **Proverbs 12:15** — Wise listen to counsel.

### A simple practice
Name one “perfect aircraft” assumption in your life (perfect health, perfect schedule, perfect church, perfect spouse response). Write the “warped” version that is more likely under stress. Design one recovery drill for that warped version and run it once this week.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How do I prepare for imperfect conditions? What does spin recovery look like in ordinary life? Why did Ken emphasize full load?* Keep the warped-aircraft teaching primary.
