# Visit to Gideon’s Pool in Israel

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 10:** Check Your Gauges – Prepare Your Response

## Context for the Reader

This chapter returns to the three core emergency procedures that run through the entire book. Dean emphasizes that “analyze the situation” is not passive — it is an active, deliberate examination of what is really happening before taking action. The story of Gideon is used as a powerful biblical model of analysis under pressure.

This lesson is embodied memory: standing at a shallow Israeli stream named Gideon’s Pool, Dean sees how ordinary the place is — and how real the test becomes when you can picture the men drinking.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s visit treats biblical places as aids to faith, not tourism trophies. Scripture itself ties remembrance to stones, meals, and locations that keep God’s acts concrete.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Visiting the place made the story more real | Remember the wonders he has done (Psalm 105:5); tell your children (Deuteronomy 6:6–9) |
| Ordinary geography hosts holy decisions | God chooses the weak and lowly settings (1 Corinthians 1:27–29); Jacob’s ordinary stone becomes Bethel (Genesis 28:10–19) |
| Seeing helps the mind’s eye teach the heart | Faith comes by hearing the word (Romans 10:17); blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe (John 20:29) — sight can help without replacing faith |
| Shared journey with Vickie | Two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9); companions in the faith (3 John 1:8) |

## Dean's excerpt

### A wide place in a small stream

A few years ago, Vickie and I visited that pool in Israel (now called Gideon’s Pool). Our visit made the story of Gideon even more real for me. The pool of Gideon is simply a wide place in a small stream at the edge of a hill. The stream runs very shallow and trickles between mounds of sand so it is no deeper than three to four inches in any place between the islands of sand. The pool is about twelve to fifteen feet wide. I could see in my mind’s eye a legion of soldiers kneeling on the sand to drink from these tiny streams.

> **Scholar sidebar — Small water, large test**
> Psalm 105:5 urges remembrance of wonders; Dean’s shallow trickle is remembrance with boots on the ground. Analysis in Judges 7 did not require a grand reservoir — only obedience at an ordinary stream. Chapter 10’s gauge-check can happen in plain places too.

---

## Takeaways

1. **On-site visit.** Dean and Vickie stood at what is now called Gideon’s Pool.
2. **Story made real.** Place turned narrative into something he could see.
3. **Ordinary water.** Wide spot in a small stream at a hill’s edge — not a spectacle lake.
4. **Shallow trickle.** Three to four inches between sand mounds; twelve to fifteen feet wide.
5. **Mind’s eye.** He pictured soldiers kneeling on sand to drink from tiny streams.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Visiting Gideon’s Pool in Israel — a shallow, ordinary stream — made the biblical selection story vividly real for Dean and Vickie.

### Why include travel details in a lesson on analysis?
Because careful examination includes concrete reality; the test happened in inches of water, not mythic fog.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Judges 7:5–6** — The men at the water.
- **Psalm 105:5** — Remember his wonders.
- **Deuteronomy 6:6–9** — Keep the words before you.
- **Ecclesiastes 4:9** — Two are better than one.
- **Genesis 28:16–19** — Ordinary place marked as God’s house.

### A simple practice
Read Judges 7 aloud, then sketch the pool from Dean’s description (shallow, sand islands, 12–15 feet). Ask: where is my “ordinary stream” where God is asking me to watch carefully how people — and I — actually drink, act, and follow?

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Did Dean visit Gideon’s Pool? What was the place like? How did it affect him?*
