# Crash Headfirst or Find a Safe Place to Land

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 12:** Prepare for the Crash – Right Reactions to Crises
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter addresses the uncomfortable truth that sometimes the best outcome is a **controlled crash landing** rather than staying in the air. Dean emphasizes that pride often prevents people from taking the necessary action to survive. The chapter prepares the reader for the final phase of the book: **landing as soon as practical**.

This lesson is the fork in the chapter: flailing ends either in a painful thump or in a deliberate search for a safe place to land — and only you can choose the alternative path.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture repeatedly sets a fork before the drifting person: destruction by stubborn path, or turning toward life. Decision is not optional when impact is near.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Two outcomes while flailing | There is a way that seems right… its end is the way to death (Proverbs 14:12); choose this day whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15) |
| Regain control before you can land | Spirit of power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7); be steadfast, immovable (1 Corinthians 15:58) |
| Analyze, then look for alternatives | The prudent gives thought to his steps (Proverbs 14:15); plans fail without counsel (Proverbs 15:22) |
| Normally an alternative exists — decide deliberately | I have set before you life and death… therefore choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19); ask for the ancient paths (Jeremiah 6:16) |
| How and where you land life is crucial | Narrow is the way that leads to life (Matthew 7:13–14); look carefully how you walk (Ephesians 5:15) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Thump or landing — your decision

When you are flailing out of control, are you going to fly headfirst into the ground with a painful thump or are you going to look for “a safe place to land”? If you are going to look for a safe landing place, you must first regain control, analyze your situation, and then look for the desired alternatives. It is necessary to take care of the emergency and determine the necessary action to help you land safely. I have found that there is normally an alternative to an impending crash, but it requires making a deliberate decision to find a method of controlling your flight path. Only you can decide to take that alternative flight path and take corrective action. Your decision on how and where to land your life is crucial. Once you regain control and stabilize your most immediate problem, then you can take a second step.

> **Scholar sidebar — Deliberate alternative**
> Proverbs 14:12 and Deuteronomy 30:19 underwrite the fork. 2 Timothy 1:7 underwrites regain control. Proverbs 14:15 and 15:22 underwrite analyze-and-counsel. Matthew 7:13–14 underwrites that *where* you land matters. Keep Dean’s sequence intact: control → analyze → alternatives → deliberate path — then a second step after the immediate problem is stabilized. “Controlled crash landing” language in the chapter frame is still a *chosen* landing, not passive impact.

## Takeaways

1. **Binary under flail.** Painful thump or search for a safe place to land.
2. **Order of recovery.** Regain control, analyze, then seek alternatives.
3. **Emergency first.** Take care of what threatens impact now.
4. **Alternative is normal — decision is rare.** The path exists; deliberate choice seizes it.
5. **You own the path.** How and where you land life is crucial; stabilize, then step two.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When you are flailing, either you hit the ground headfirst or you look for a safe place to land — and landing requires regaining control, analyzing, and deliberately choosing an alternative path.

### Why “only you can decide”?
Because no instructor can shove the corrective action into your hands forever; counsel helps, but the yoke decision is yours.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 14:12** — Way that seems right; end is death.
- **Deuteronomy 30:19** — Choose life.
- **2 Timothy 1:7** — Self-control.
- **Proverbs 14:15** — Prudent thought to steps.
- **Proverbs 15:22** — Counsel and plans.
- **Matthew 7:13–14** — Narrow way to life.
- **Ephesians 5:15** — Look carefully how you walk.

### A simple practice
Write two columns: *Thump path* (what I keep doing) and *Landing path* (one alternative flight path this week). Circle one corrective action you will take in 48 hours.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does Dean mean by safe place to land? Is there usually an alternative to a crash? Why must I regain control first?*
