## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section I by stopping anger from draining recovery. After the cautionary friend, Dean turns explicitly to Scripture’s harder path: harmony instead of revenge.

This lesson is the 1 Peter 3:8–9 core — blessing over insult so a new perspective and inherited blessing become possible.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean already quotes Peter; the table stays with that text and its near neighbors so revenge is answered by calling, not by willpower theater.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Sound biblical advice when life feels torn apart | All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16) |
| Develop harmony rather than revenge | Live in harmony… do not repay evil for evil… bless (1 Peter 3:8–9) |
| Tough assignment, necessary for new perspective | Overcome evil with good (Romans 12:17–21) |
| Called to blessing so you may inherit a blessing | 1 Peter 3:9; see that no one repays evil for evil… always seek to do good (1 Thessalonians 5:15) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Harmony over revenge

The Bible has some very sound advice for those times when you become angry with someone, a circumstance, or some company that, you feel, has torn your life apart. The Bible tells us to develop harmony rather than revenge. That is a tough assignment sometimes, but necessary if you wish to gain a new perspective. 1 Peter 3:8-9 (NIV) says, “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”

> **Scholar sidebar — Blessing as calling**
> Keep 1 Peter 3:8–9 as Dean’s spine. Romans 12:17–21 and 1 Thessalonians 5:15 echo the same refusal of payback. “New perspective” here is not mood management; it is obedience that frees the eyes. Do not soften “tough assignment.”

## Takeaways

1. **Person, circumstance, or company.** Anger’s targets are wide; counsel is the same.
2. **Harmony, not revenge.** The Bible’s direction is development of peace, not scorekeeping.
3. **Tough, necessary.** Dean admits the difficulty without dropping the requirement.
4. **Peter’s list.** Sympathetic, brotherly love, compassion, humility.
5. **Blessing for blessing.** Called to repay insult with blessing and inherit a blessing.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When anger rises at a person, circumstance, or company, Scripture calls you to develop harmony rather than revenge — blessing instead of insult — so you can gain a new perspective and inherit a blessing.

### Why is revenge so tempting in crisis?
Because it feels like control; Dean says it blocks the very perspective recovery needs.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **1 Peter 3:8–9** — Harmony; blessing; calling.
- **Romans 12:17–21** — Do not repay evil; overcome with good.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:15** — Seek to do good.
- **2 Timothy 3:16** — Scripture trains in righteousness.

### A simple practice
Name one insult or injury you are rehearsing. Write one blessing sentence you could pray or speak without lying (truthful good, not fake warmth). Do not force a premature meeting if safety forbids it — start with the heart posture.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does harmony rather than revenge mean? How does 1 Peter 3:8–9 guide anger? Why is it necessary for new perspective?*
