# Anger Method Three: Look Beyond Irritation

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 14:** Think Straight – Stop Anger Now!

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section I by stopping anger from stealing recovery energy. Methods one and two fail; method three aims the eyes forward.

This lesson is the constructive path: look beyond irritation to future goals so anger — a road to nowhere — is left behind before it empties recovery strength.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s third method matches forward hope without denying present pain. Scripture pairs forgetting what lies behind with patient affliction and redeemed time.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Look beyond irritation | Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward (Philippians 3:13–14) |
| Anger is a road that leads to nowhere | The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God (James 1:20) |
| Shift from present angst to future possibilities | Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction (Romans 12:12) |
| Leave anger behind; energy for recovery matters | Redeem the time (Ephesians 5:15–16); lay aside every weight (Hebrews 12:1) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Method three and spent energy

The third common method of handling anger is to look beyond your irritation. Anger is a road that leads to nowhere, but moving focus from the angst of the moment to the future can change your environment. It moves your attitude from concentrating on the angst of the present problem to the possibilities of the future. By consciously looking at a goal beyond your present situation you can leave anger behind.

When I have experienced anger, the result is usually the same: nothing is resolved and my energy level for recovery diminishes proportionately with the level of the anger. It is important to get anger behind you.

> **Scholar sidebar — Future focus, not fantasy**
> Philippians 3:13–14 and Romans 12:12 underwrite forward hope. James 1:20 refuses to baptize rage as righteousness. Hebrews 12:1 and Ephesians 5:15–16 treat wasted heat as weight and lost time. Dean’s energy equation is experiential: more anger, less recovery fuel.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Method three defined.** Look beyond the irritation itself.
2. **Road to nowhere.** Anger without a future aim stalls.
3. **Focus shift.** Present angst yields to future possibility.
4. **Conscious goal.** Leaving anger behind is intentional, not accidental.
5. **Energy math.** Unresolved anger burns the fuel recovery needs.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
The third way to handle anger is to look beyond irritation toward a future goal — because anger resolves nothing and drains recovery energy in proportion to its heat.

### How is this different from ignoring anger?
Ignoring buries the feeling; looking beyond redirects energy to a real goal after the feeling is faced.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Philippians 3:13–14** — Strain forward.
- **Romans 12:12** — Joyful hope; patient affliction.
- **James 1:20** — Man’s anger and God’s righteousness.
- **Hebrews 12:1** — Lay aside every weight.
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Redeem the time.

### A simple practice
Write one present irritation and one concrete future goal that deserves your energy this week. Schedule one action on the goal; refuse one rehearsal of the irritation.
