# God's Plans Better, Seldom Comfortable

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Having acted toward ministry, Dean theorizes the discomfort: he delayed changes he knew were right until God used crisis as a push. Faith on the unknown path, he says, saves time others waste on stalled timing excuses.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean holds two truths: God’s way is better, and it often costs comfort. Scripture joins superior divine purpose with costly discipleship and timely obedience.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| God’s plans better than ours, seldom comfortable | My thoughts are not your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8–9); take up your cross (Luke 9:23) |
| Timing felt inappropriate though heart knew the right change | Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it (James 4:17); today, if you hear his voice (Hebrews 3:15) |
| God may push when we will not decide | The Lord disciplines the one he loves (Hebrews 12:5–6); he leads me in paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3) |
| Faith on His pathway saves time | Trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5–6); the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn (Proverbs 4:18) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Seldom comfortable

I stated early in this book that God’s plans are always better than ours, but are seldom comfortable. In the past I had always felt the timing was inappropriate to make the changes that I knew in my heart were right for me. My inability to make a firm decision caused God to choose this tool to push me down the road and follow His path. It is tough to take that unknown path but very important to rely on God’s course. The concern is normal but the faith in following His pathway saves a lot of time.

> **Scholar sidebar — Comfort is not the compass**
> Isaiah 55:8–9 and Luke 9:23 keep “better” from meaning “easier.” James 4:17 names delayed obedience. Dean’s “saves a lot of time” is practical faith — not a guarantee of speed for every reader, but his verdict after delay cost him years of talking without acting.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Better ≠ comfortable.** Book-wide claim restated here.
2. **Heart knew; calendar stalled.** Inappropriate timing was the excuse.
3. **Indecision invited a push.** God used the tool of crisis.
4. **Unknown path is tough.** Rely on His course anyway.
5. **Faith saves time.** Concern is normal; stalling is costly.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
God’s plans are better but seldom comfortable; when he would not decide, God pushed him onto that path — and faith following it saves wasted time.

### Why admit the push?
So readers see crisis as possible mercy on stalled obedience, not only random harm.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Isaiah 55:8–9** — Higher ways.
- **Luke 9:23** — Cross-bearing discipleship.
- **James 4:17** — Knowing right and not doing it.
- **Hebrews 3:15** — Today if you hear.
- **Proverbs 3:5–6** — Trust His path.
- **Hebrews 12:5–6** — Loving discipline.

### A simple practice
Name one change your heart already knows is right that you keep calling “bad timing.” Write the cost of another year of delay in one sentence.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
