# Grandfather Dreams, Chart a Course

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 16:** Use Time as Your Friend – Determine Your Goal and Work Toward It

## Context for the Reader

Dean refuses to make every reader’s path “full-time ministry.” This lesson is the transferable counsel: find where desire leads to peace, remember grandfather’s word on dreams, and start charting the course.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean joins desire, peace, and planned movement. Scripture allows godly aspiration, seeks peace as a marker, and calls for ordered steps toward what is good — without baptizing every dream as divine.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Find where desire for success leads; follow to peace | Delight yourself in the Lord; he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4); let the peace of Christ rule (Colossians 3:15) |
| Satisfaction with accomplishment differs by person | Each will receive his own reward (1 Corinthians 3:8); as God has assigned (Romans 12:6–8) |
| No limit to dreams aimed at something special | Where there is no vision, people cast off restraint (Proverbs 29:18); run to obtain the prize (1 Corinthians 9:24) |
| Chart a course toward the goal | The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance (Proverbs 21:5); forget what lies behind… press on (Philippians 3:13–14) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Chart the goal

Your passion may not lead you to full-time ministry but it is important to find out where your desire for success leads. It is imperative to follow that desire to the point where you find peace. I know there is some point for everyone where they feel satisfaction with accomplishment. That spot is probably different for each of us. Guess what? As my grandfather used to say, “There is no limit to dreams and if you dream, do it with a desire to reach something special.” Begin thinking about that goal you have always wanted to reach and then begin charting a course to take you there.

> **Scholar sidebar — Peace as checkpoint**
> Colossians 3:15 and Psalm 37:4 keep desire under the Lord’s rule, not raw ambition. Proverbs 21:5 and Philippians 3:13–14 underwrite “charting a course.” Grandfather’s line is family wisdom Dean adopts — present it as his quoted counsel, not a new biblical verse.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Not only ministry.** Passion paths differ; the method transfers.
2. **Follow to peace.** Desire needs a peace checkpoint.
3. **Personal satisfaction point.** One size does not fit all.
4. **Grandfather on dreams.** No limit; aim at something special.
5. **Think, then chart.** Goal first, then course.

---

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Whatever your passion (not only ministry), follow desire to peace, dream toward something special, and start charting a course to the goal you always wanted.

### Why quote grandfather?
To root goal-setting in ordinary wisdom the reader can remember — not only seminary language.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 37:4** — Delight; desires of the heart.
- **Colossians 3:15** — Peace of Christ rule.
- **Proverbs 21:5** — Diligent plans.
- **Philippians 3:13–14** — Press toward the goal.
- **Proverbs 29:18** — Vision.
- **1 Corinthians 9:24** — Run to obtain.

### A simple practice
Write the goal you have “always wanted.” Under it, three course waypoints for the next ninety days.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What if my passion is not ministry? What did Dean’s grandfather say about dreams? How do I chart a course?*
