# Stop Talking, Enter Ministry

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 16:** Use Time as Your Friend – Determine Your Goal and Work Toward It

## Context for the Reader

Seminary confirmed the field; this beat is the decision threshold. Dean admits ministry lived only in the back of his mind until crisis and new freedom forced honesty: stop talking, act.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean moves from desire to deed. Scripture presses hearers to become doers, to redeem opportunity, and to walk through doors God opens without endless delay.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Long-held ministry desire becomes possible reality | Desire a noble task (1 Timothy 3:1); the harvest is plentiful (Matthew 9:37–38) |
| Time to make decisions when freedom arrives | Choose this day whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15); how long will you go limping? (1 Kings 18:21) |
| God set the stage | A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps (Proverbs 16:9) |
| Stop talking; do something about the opportunity | Be doers of the word (James 1:22); faith apart from works is dead (James 2:17) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Stop talking

Full-time ministry had always been in the back of my mind and for the first time in my life, it seemed now it could be a reality. I could now do whatever I wanted so it was time to make some decisions. It would have been difficult to make that change under previous circumstances. God set the stage and left very little choice for me if I was to be truthful with myself. It was time to stop talking about entering the ministry and time to do something about the opportunity.

> **Scholar sidebar — Truthfulness as the pressure**
> James 1:22 and 2:17 underwrite “stop talking… do something.” Proverbs 16:9 keeps “God set the stage” from becoming fatalism — Dean still must decide. The honesty clause (“if I was to be truthful with myself”) is the moral hinge.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Back-of-mind desire.** Ministry was long present, not sudden invention.
2. **First-time reality.** Crisis freedom made it seem possible.
3. **Decisions required.** “Do whatever I wanted” still demands choices.
4. **Stage set.** God arranged circumstances previous life blocked.
5. **Talk → act.** Opportunity without action is unfinished counsel.

---

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When full-time ministry finally looked real, he had to stop talking about it and act on the opportunity God had staged.

### Why “little choice if truthful”?
Because self-honesty removed the old excuses once the stage was set.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 1:22** — Doers of the word.
- **James 2:17** — Faith with works.
- **Joshua 24:15** — Choose this day.
- **Proverbs 16:9** — Lord establishes steps.
- **1 Timothy 3:1** — Noble desire.
- **Matthew 9:37–38** — Harvest and laborers.

### A simple practice
Name one calling you only talk about. Write one concrete action due within seven days — calendar it.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *When did Dean decide to enter ministry? What does he mean by stop talking? How did God set the stage?*
