## Context for the Reader

The church job opened a door; his wife names the long-held ministry desire and pushes school. This lesson is the study-and-joy beat: third master’s, early mornings, Bible questions, burden turning to fun — before DTS campus details and graduation.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean pairs spousal wisdom with serious preparation for ministry. Scripture honors counsel from a close companion, diligence in study, and joy that grows when vocation aligns with desire under God.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Wife knows the desire and encourages school | Two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10); a prudent wife is from the Lord (Proverbs 19:14) |
| Prepare if you really want ministry work | Do your best to present yourself as one approved (2 Timothy 2:15); desire to be an overseer is a noble task (1 Timothy 3:1) |
| Mature learner still studies | Let the wise hear and increase in learning (Proverbs 1:5); grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18) |
| Burden becomes satisfying joy | The joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10); delight yourself in the Lord (Psalm 37:4) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Burden became objective

My wife knew of the desire I had always carried to work in ministry and she encouraged me to go back to school. I entered seminary for what would be my third master’s degree. I had prepared for my career in the corporate world with a Masters in Business and a Masters in Public Administration. If I really wanted to work in ministry, I decided I wanted to dive into a study that could help prepare me. I embarked on a master’s degree in religious studies. The degree would at least prepare me to make that fresh start in a new career. Admittedly, there were times I wasn’t sure my mature brain was ready for new study, but the classes were challenging and they grew on me. I suddenly found myself getting up at five a.m. to study and asking questions I had carried in my mind for years about the Bible. Suddenly life was fun. What had started out as a burden became an objective that was more satisfying than anything I had done in years.

> **Scholar sidebar — Desire plus discipline**
> Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 honors the wife’s read of his long desire. 2 Timothy 2:15 underwrites “dive into a study that could help prepare me.” Psalm 37:4 and Nehemiah 8:10 meet the surprise of fun — joy as strength, not frivolity — when the objective finally matches the buried calling.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Wife saw the desire.** Ministry had always been carried; she named and encouraged it.
2. **Third master’s.** Corporate degrees first; religious studies for a fresh start.
3. **Honest doubt.** Mature brain readiness was not assumed.
4. **Five a.m. and old questions.** Practice and curiosity returned together.
5. **Burden → fun → satisfaction.** The emotional arc is part of Dean’s evidence.

Because “use time as friend” is not only grit — alignment can restore delight.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Ecclesiastes 4:9–10** — Two better than one.
- **2 Timothy 2:15** — Approved worker; rightly handle the word.
- **Proverbs 1:5** — Increase in learning.
