## Context for the Reader

The 30,000-foot principle becomes a marriage practice: change routine and scenery, talk new things, plan crises before they hit, and take intentional mini-holidays after large life changes. Preparation and angle-change are another way to fly free.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean sanctifies rest-with-purpose and shared counsel. Scripture supports Sabbath-like pause, walking together, and wise foresight.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Change routine and scenery for better view | Come away by yourselves and rest a while (Mark 6:31); he makes me lie down in green pastures (Psalm 23:2–3) |
| Two looking ahead together | Two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9–12); iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17) |
| Plan events and crisis responses | The prudent sees danger and hides himself (Proverbs 22:3); which of you counts the cost (Luke 14:28) |
| Prepared problems are minimized | By wise guidance you can wage war (Proverbs 24:6); prepare minds for action (1 Peter 1:13) |
| Getaway develops solutions | In quietness and trust (Isaiah 30:15); be still and know (Psalm 46:10) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Mini holidays

One of the reasons my wife and I take time on a regular basis to change our routine is to change scenery. We get a better view of our lives by changing our habits and environment. We attempt to take a look at life from the 30,000-foot viewpoint. Amazingly on those outings, we talk about new things, get away from the concerns of normal work, and forget about cleaning the garage. We try to plan events we know are coming and decide what to do if we are faced with a crisis. It is just a great time to look ahead, evaluate the past, and decide on new paths.

Whenever we have had a large change in our lives, we intentionally take one of these mini holidays and find it great therapy. We take that time to slow down and talk about possibilities that can be used to stabilize life. The getaway helps us develop solutions. Problems are minimized if you are prepared to face them. Preparation requires looking at life from a different angle. Maybe it is yet another opportunity to fly free.

> **Scholar sidebar — Therapy with a heading**
> Mark 6:31 and Psalm 23:2–3 underwrite deliberate withdrawal. Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 underwrites couple practice. Proverbs 22:3 and 24:6 underwrite crisis pre-decisions. This is not denial tourism — angle change for solutions and stabilization.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Regular rhythm.** Not only emergency escapes.
2. **Scenery + habits.** Both change for better view.
3. **30,000-foot outings.** New talk; work drop; garage forgotten.
4. **Pre-plan crises.** Decide responses before impact.
5. **After large change.** Intentional mini-holiday as therapy and solution shop.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
He and his wife regularly change scenery for a 30,000-foot look — planning ahead and, after big changes, using mini-holidays to slow down, stabilize, and solve.

### Must it be expensive travel?
Dean’s point is changed routine/environment and unhurried talk — scale to means.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Mark 6:31** — Come away and rest.
- **Psalm 23:2–3** — Still waters; restored soul.
- **Ecclesiastes 4:9–12** — Two better than one.
- **Proverbs 22:3** — Prudent sees danger.
- **Proverbs 24:6** — Wise guidance.
- **Isaiah 30:15** — Quietness and trust.

### A simple practice
Schedule one mini-holiday block (even half a day) with a trusted person: no garage list; three questions only — past, ahead, if-crisis.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How do Dean and his wife get perspective? What are mini-holidays for? How does preparation minimize problems?*
