## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean privileges calm rationality under urgency. Scripture joins self-control, slow speech, and peace that guards decisions.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Slow the situation; evaluate; develop solution | Quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger (James 1:19–20); spirit of… self-control (2 Timothy 1:7) |
| Hurry is the common temptation | The one who hastens with his feet misses his way (Proverbs 19:2); desire without knowledge is not good (same) |
| Rational when calm | You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you (Isaiah 26:3); peace of God… guard your hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6–7) |
| Knee-jerk may reenter the storm | Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty (Proverbs 16:32); the simple inherits folly (Proverbs 14:18) |
| Moment to locate self and alternatives | Ponder the path of your feet (Proverbs 4:26); look carefully how you walk (Ephesians 5:15) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Slow enough to think

If you are piloting an airplane and there is an emergency, time becomes compressed and it is essential to slow down the situation, evaluate what is happening, and develop a solution. When you can slow down you can begin making decisions that will help.

When we have an unexpected situation arise in life the tendency is to hurry to a solution. The correct answer is often determined by slowing down and determining a new way out of the problem. Amazingly, we are much more rational when we are calm and we can think. That normal first reaction that pushes us toward a knee-jerk solution may result in reentering the storm.

If we can just take a moment to determine where we are and the available alternatives, then alternatives often can become solutions.

> **Scholar sidebar — Calm is not delay-for-its-own-sake**
> James 1:19–20 and 2 Timothy 1:7 underwrite controlled pace. Proverbs 19:2 warns hasty feet. Dean’s “reentering the storm” is the cost of knee-jerk — keep that image when users want instant fixes. Alternatives become solutions only after a locating moment.
