# Stretch Like Wings, God's Image

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

After Deut/James, Dean warns that flex is not magic: metal has limits; lives without elasticity snap. Satisfaction comes when you realize stretch capacity under God’s image and strength — extra effort required.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean balances capacity and limit. Scripture locates endurance in God’s strength and image-bearing dignity, while admitting human frailty.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Dig to basic design; pick up extra strength | Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might (Ephesians 6:10); strengthened with all power (Colossians 1:11) |
| Weathering requires extra effort | Make every effort to supplement your faith (2 Peter 1:5–6); run to obtain (1 Corinthians 9:24–27) |
| Limits exist; without elasticity we snap | We have this treasure in jars of clay (2 Corinthians 4:7); the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41) |
| God’s image; with His strength endure | God created man in his own image (Genesis 1:27); I can do all things through him who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Stretch capacity

The necessary elasticity to get through a storm requires us to dig down to our basic design and pick up extra strength. We have the ability to weather a storm but it does require a little extra effort. It is no wonder that an airplane can literally be torn apart in a storm because there are limits to the ability of metal to stretch.

You might try to understand that the engineers have built into those wings the strongest possible alloys available to carry a huge load when it is needed. If we don’t build some elasticity into our lives, we can also snap. Life becomes much more satisfying when you realize that you too have the ability to stretch, much like the wings of an airplane. God designed us in His image and with His strength we can endure anything that comes along.

> **Scholar sidebar — Alloys and image**
> Ephesians 6:10 and Philippians 4:13 locate “extra strength” in God, not ego. Genesis 1:27 grounds “His image.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 keeps clay limits visible — Dean’s “torn apart” line is sober. Build elasticity (practices, faith, community) before the load spike.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Extra strength required.** Flex is active, not passive.
2. **Ability + effort.** Weathering is possible and costly.
3. **Metal limits.** Aircraft can tear apart.
4. **Lives snap too.** No built-in elasticity → break.
5. **Image + His strength.** Stretch capacity and deep satisfaction.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
You must dig for design strength and extra effort — without elasticity you snap — but in God’s image and strength you can stretch and endure.

### How is this different from “just be tough”?
The source is God’s design and strength, not bare willpower.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Genesis 1:27** — God’s image.
- **Ephesians 6:10** — Strong in the Lord.
- **Philippians 4:13** — Strengthened by Christ.
- **Colossians 1:11** — Strengthened with all power.
- **2 Corinthians 4:7** — Jars of clay.
- **2 Peter 1:5–6** — Make every effort.

### A simple practice
Name one “elasticity practice” you will build before the next load (sleep, prayer, counsel, margin). Schedule it twice this week.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Can people snap in storms? What does Dean mean by elasticity? How does God’s image relate to enduring?*
