# Wings Elasticity, Deut 31:6, James 1:2-3

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Straight-ahead flight needs a frame that flexes. Dean’s design claim — wings and people — is braced by two texts he quotes: courage facing the enemy, and joy when faith is tested so endurance can grow. Key to calm air is flying straight through.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s two citations are the spine; nearby texts reinforce designed endurance without denying real testing.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Designed to flex through storms | We are his workmanship (Ephesians 2:10); formed in the womb for purpose (Psalm 139:13–16) |
| God knew we would be tested | The Lord tests the heart (Proverbs 17:3); now for a little while you have been grieved by trials (1 Peter 1:6–7) |
| Be strong and courageous facing the enemy | Deuteronomy 31:6 (Dean’s citation) |
| Trouble as joy-opportunity; endurance grows | James 1:2–3 (Dean’s citation) |
| Straight through to calm air | When you pass through the waters (Isaiah 43:2); peace after the storm calmed (Mark 4:39–40) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Designed to flex

The designers of airplanes intentionally design the wings with enough elasticity to flex enough to make it through thunderstorms. You are designed the same way. God knew that we are going to be tested in life and He says so over and over again in the Bible. Remember the instruction of that old verse in Deuteronomy, “Be strong and courageous, even in the face of your enemy” Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV, author’s emphasis on ‘courageous’). Sometimes we need to be reminded that it is going to take strength to make it through tough times. The key is to fly straight through the turbulence so that you can get to the calm air. James writes in 1:2-3 (NIV) “Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.”

> **Scholar sidebar — Design + two texts**
> Keep Deuteronomy 31:6 and James 1:2–3 as Dean’s chosen pair: courage under threat, and joy that serves endurance growth. Ephesians 2:10 supports “you are designed.” Flex is not infinite — next lesson notes snap limits — but here the claim is God-built capacity for the pass-through.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Intentional elasticity.** Wings flex by design.
2. **You likewise.** Human design claim under God.
3. **Testing expected.** Bible says so repeatedly.
4. **Deut 31:6.** Strong and courageous facing the enemy.
5. **James 1:2–3.** Trouble → joy opportunity → endurance growth; straight through to calm air.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Like flexing wings, you are designed to make it through tests — be strong and courageous (Deut 31:6), treat trouble as joy that grows endurance (James 1:2–3), and fly straight to calm air.

### Why pair those two verses?
Courage for the enemy-face; joy-endurance for the faith-test — both fuel straight-through flight.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Deuteronomy 31:6** — Strong and courageous (Dean).
- **James 1:2–4** — Trials; endurance; maturity.
- **Ephesians 2:10** — His workmanship.
- **1 Peter 1:6–7** — Tested faith.
- **Isaiah 43:2** — Through the waters.
- **Mark 4:39–40** — Peace, be still.

### A simple practice
Copy Deut 31:6 and James 1:2–3 on one card. Read them before one hard conversation or task this week — then take the straight-ahead step.
