# Don Builds Opportunity from Europe to Home

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 18:** Decide Where to Fly – Make A Decision
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 18 completes Don’s arc: the “waste of time” simulator became the meeting that offered Europe; gratitude and family move followed; international experience and unretracted helpfulness made him valuable again at home. Dean’s moral is analysis plus action — building the chance to decide well for family and future.

This lesson is opportunity earned, not luck alone — matching the aircrew “not luck” thesis.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Faithfulness in obscure diligence, thanksgiving, and leaving bitterness can reopen doors. Scripture ties stewardship of skill to providence without denying human action.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Peers may call diligence waste | Whatever you do, work heartily (Colossians 3:23–24) |
| Thank God for opportunity | Give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18) |
| Family can share the adventure of a hard move | As for me and my house (Joshua 24:15); nurture in the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) |
| Character is remembered when companies reconsider | A good name is better than riches (Proverbs 22:1); let light shine (Matthew 5:16) |
| Analyze assets; take proper action; then decide | Plans fail without counsel (Proverbs 15:22); commit works to the Lord (Proverbs 16:3) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Europe, gratitude, options

Don attended the simulator session while many of his peers felt it would be a waste of time. He met a man at the simulator who offered him a job flying for a small airline in Europe. Don accepted the job, thanked God for the opportunity, and decided to take his young family with him to Europe. His wife and son have now traveled throughout Europe, lived on the economy, educated their son by showing him historic places, and are enjoying their lives.

In a recent conversation, I was astounded to hear Don say his contract is coming to an end in Europe. He is contemplating renewing the contract but the really great news is that the company that laid him off is also discussing the possibility of bringing him back to work here in the United States. They recognize his worth, his positive attitude, and his leadership. They appreciated that he extended himself to help them when many of his peers had cut off ties after the layoff. By analyzing his assets in a challenging situation, Don had improved himself professionally and gained valuable international experience. He analyzed the situation, took proper action, and we will soon know where he is going to land. Don built opportunity for himself with his action to be able to make a decision that is best for his family and his future.

> **Scholar sidebar — Action builds the menu of decisions**
> Dean’s close is the chapter title in story form: Don can “decide where to fly” because prior action created real options. Proverbs 22:1 and Matthew 5:16 underwrite remembered character. Thanksgiving (1 Thessalonians 5:18) marks the Europe acceptance. Analysis + proper action is the same triad language the book loves — here applied to career landing.

## Takeaways

1. **Diligence others mock can be the door.** Simulator “waste” produced the Europe offer.
2. **Accept, thank God, take the family.** Decision included household, not solo heroics.
3. **Hard seasons can educate and enrich.** Travel, economy living, historic places.
4. **Character after layoff is noticed.** Worth, attitude, leadership, continued help.
5. **Build opportunity, then choose.** Analyze assets, act, then decide for family and future.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Don’s continued training led to a Europe flying job he received with thanks to God; his professionalism later made even his former employer want him back, giving him real options for family and future.

### What did he “build”?
Not entitlement — improved skill, international experience, and a reputation for help after others cut ties.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Colossians 3:23–24** — Work heartily for the Lord.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:18** — Give thanks.
- **Proverbs 22:1** — Good name.
- **Matthew 5:16** — Let light shine.
- **Proverbs 16:3** — Commit work to the Lord.

### A simple practice
Name one relationship or skill you are tempted to drop after a rejection. Take one helpful action this week that a bitter peer would skip. Journal how that action might widen future options.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How did Don get the Europe job? Why might his old company rehire him? How did he build opportunity?*
