# Estavio Chooses Computers and Flies Free

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 18:** Decide Where to Fly – Make A Decision
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 18’s first long civilian story resolves in decisive action. Estavio had dreamed of aviation or computers while security kept him banked in place; layoff forced the analysis. He ranked what family timing could bear, chose computers, executed a plan, and Dean names the outcome: flying free.

This lesson is the full pivot: trapped desire → realistic analysis → committed path → new career.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean shows desire tested by prudence and finished by diligence. Scripture honors both God-given longing and sober counting of cost for those who depend on you.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Security can trap you from true desire | Gain the world and forfeit soul (Mark 8:36); anxiety’s choke (Mark 4:19) |
| Loss can open a long-delayed path | What you meant for evil God meant for good (Genesis 50:20) |
| Analyze ability and timing for family | Provide for your household (1 Timothy 5:8); count the cost (Luke 14:28–30) |
| Diligent study toward a new vocation | Whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23) |
| Job loss can yield a freer future | A wide place after distress (Psalm 18:19); hope does not put to shame (Romans 5:5) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Dream, analysis, degree, free

Estavio finally concluded that he really wanted to change careers. He had felt trapped for years because of the security in his job but he really had always wanted to be a pilot or to work with computers. The desire for aviation and computers had been inside his head all those years he had been a banker, and he now had the opportunity to follow his dream.

Having come out of an aviation career before becoming a pastor, I was quick to point out the fact that it was time for him to make the move if he was serious about learning the aviation industry. He analyzed his ability to move rapidly and determined the certifications to become a pilot were not plausible financially in time to take care of his family. He chose to try concentrating on computers and set up a plan to make that happen. He enrolled in a local school that would allow him to obtain an associate degree in computer science. He applied himself diligently to the program, and has now completed a two-year degree in just over one year of study. He graduated with honors and is well on his way to a new, exciting career.

The loss of a job allowed Estavio to pursue and compete for an entirely new career and future. He is flying free.

> **Scholar sidebar — Decide where to fly means choose a real runway**
> Dean encouraged aviation seriousness *and* honored Estavio’s family-timed no. Luke 14:28–30 and 1 Timothy 5:8 underwrite that prudence. Colossians 3:23 underwrites the honors-paced degree. “Flying free” here is vocational liberty after decisive, responsible choice — not impulse cosplay of a pilot dream.

## Takeaways

1. **Security can cage a calling.** Years of banking held pilot/computer desires inside.
2. **Loss can unlock opportunity.** Layoff became permission to move.
3. **Seriousness invites hard timing math.** Pilot path failed the family-finance clock.
4. **Choose, plan, apply diligently.** Computers + associate degree + honors pace.
5. **Job loss → new future.** Dean’s verdict: he is flying free.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Estavio left trapped security, ruled out pilot certifications for family timing, earned a computer-science degree with honors in just over a year, and is flying free.

### Why not force the aviation dream?
Because Chapter 18’s decision includes effects on life — especially dependents — not only romance of the sky.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Luke 14:28–30** — Count the cost.
- **1 Timothy 5:8** — Provide for household.
- **Colossians 3:23** — Work heartily.
- **Genesis 50:20** — God can redirect harm.
- **Psalm 18:19** — Brought to a spacious place.

### A simple practice
List two long-held vocational desires. For each, write one timing constraint for those who depend on you. Pick the path that is both meaningful and plausible this year; schedule one enrollment or application step.
