# Astronaut Dream Cut for God's Greater Plan

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 19 illustrates want-versus-reality with Dean’s astronaut pursuit. Training and sacrifice met a budget cut and a scientific-background gap. Objectivity agreed with NASA; hindsight saw God’s plan steering him into beloved aviation work and into helping others. Faith trusts His goals as more real and greater.

This lesson is closed-door providence without bitterness.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Redirected ambition is a biblical pattern when God’s purpose outranks personal script. Dean models objective assessment plus later gratitude.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Great dreams may still close | A man’s heart plans; Lord establishes steps (Proverbs 16:9) |
| Objective assessment over pure disappointment | The simple believes everything; prudent thinks (Proverbs 14:15) |
| Others may be better qualified for a role | Many members, different gifts (1 Corinthians 12:14–18) |
| Closed door can open loved vocation | What He opens none shut (Revelation 3:7); all things work for good (Romans 8:28) |
| Experiences equip help for others’ goals | Comfort others with comfort we received (2 Corinthians 1:3–4) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Space dream, honest no, better plan

Many years ago I wanted to become an astronaut and fly in space. I tried to work through some of the required steps to reach that goal. I attended the schools, the training, and even sacrificed some other opportunities because of my desire to fly in space. It was a great dream but there was a problem. Most of the candidates who were kept in the space program (I was eliminated with a government budget cut) had scientific backgrounds, and I was a good pilot but not a scientist. NASA needed scientists in the spacecraft and not just someone who could fly the machine.

NASA determined there were better qualified candidates to fill the flying positions. My résumé did not say I would make the best astronaut. When I looked at the situation objectively rather than from my personal disappointment, it became apparent that there were others better qualified to fly in space. When I was objective about the situation I had to agree with their assessment. Later I realized that if I had remained in that program I would never have really gotten started in the aviation business that I have loved so much. God’s plan was for me put my faith in Him and His plan, not mine. Years later I realized that His plan was for me to use those experiences to help others reach their goals. Teach yourself to have faith that you are going to be able to use your experiences for God’s purpose and know that He is in control. His goals are much more real and greater than yours.

> **Scholar sidebar — Objectivity as spiritual discipline**
> Dean separates disappointment from assessment. Proverbs 14:15 and 16:9 underwrite clear eyes under providence. Romans 8:28 and 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 frame later usefulness. “His goals more real and greater” is the chapter’s look-beyond-the-horizon line in vocational form.

## Takeaways

1. **Serious pursuit still may end.** Schools, training, sacrifice — then cut.
2. **Fit matters.** Good pilot ≠ best astronaut when science was required.
3. **Objectivity can agree with the closed door.** Beyond pure disappointment.
4. **Loved work waited on the other side.** Aviation business he treasured.
5. **Faith in His plan; experiences help others.** Goals greater than yours.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
His astronaut dream ended with a budget cut and an objective qualification gap, which he later saw as God’s plan steering him into aviation he loved and into helping others.

### Does objectivity cancel grief?
No — Dean names disappointment, then looks past it to assessment and purpose.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 16:9** — Lord establishes steps.
- **Proverbs 14:15** — Prudent thought.
- **Romans 8:28** — Work for good.
- **2 Corinthians 1:3–4** — Comfort others.
- **1 Corinthians 12:14–18** — Different placements in the body.

### A simple practice
Name one closed door. Write two columns: disappointment / objective factors. Add one sentence on how experiences from that path might serve someone else’s goal under God.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Did Dean become an astronaut? Why was he cut? How does he read God’s plan in that loss?*
