## Context for the Reader

Chapter 19 applies truth-plus-help to Dean’s body. He accepted the disease, trusted God beyond self-control, honored medical gifts as divine placement, rejected deservingness myths, and followed treatment as hope returned. Faith and professional care together moved him from hopelessness toward flying free of the disease’s grip on mind, body, and business.

This lesson is the healing testimony block in full.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean holds divine healing purpose with ordinary means (doctors) and humility about merit. Scripture supports both prayerful trust and honored caregivers.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Accept the truth of illness | Confess reality; light exposes (John 3:20–21); prudent sees (Proverbs 22:3) |
| Faith in God who can pull through | I am the Lord who heals you (Exodus 15:26); prayer of faith (James 5:14–16) |
| Medical personnel as gifted means | Gifts differ (Romans 12:6–8); Luke the beloved physician (Colossians 4:14) |
| Not healed for superior deserving | By grace (Ephesians 2:8–9); rain on just and unjust (Matthew 5:45) |
| Hope, diligence, forward life | Hope does not put to shame (Romans 5:5); rejoice in hope (Romans 12:12) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Truth, chain of care, purpose, hope

When I was diagnosed with cancer, one of the first truths I had to accept was that the disease was present in my body. I had to deal with the problem. There were no billboards that appeared before me that said I was going to experience a downturn in my ability to operate as I had in the past. There was no immediate sign of any change except for a loss of appetite and weight loss. I knew the illness was present because the doctors said I had cancer and my body was displaying some of the signals that accompany the disease. It was then that I began to rely on something much larger than myself. I realized I was not in control of the situation so I placed my faith in the God, who I believed could pull me through the ordeal. He did exactly what I had prayed for and healed me. The healing did not take place overnight and involved the expertise of some great medical personnel who used their gifts of healing to provide me the opportunity to go on with my life. I believe God put every person in that chain of events in my life for a purpose.

I was not healed because I was a good person or more deserving than others. I believe I was healed because God had a purpose in providing the healing so that I could do what I am doing now with my life. The fact that God placed opportunities in front of me during this time of my life was evidence to me that He wanted me to go forward. Each step in the recovery process provided hope. When I realized there was hope for recovery I began diligently following every suggestion that the doctors provided to accelerate the healing process. Through the faith provided by God and the professional medical technology provided by the doctors I saw my life changing from hopelessness to an opportunity for a future. God was providing new opportunities to live and fly free of my disease and the health problems that had seemed so egregious. Through faith and His leading I was able to find new hope in the midst of the crisis. Later He used that faith to provide victory over the disease that entangled my mind, my body, and my business. All I had to do was follow His plan and use my faith. I strongly recommend you work on developing a faith that will allow you to take advantage of your moment of healing as well.

> **Scholar sidebar — Means and mercy without merit theater**
> Dean refuses “I was better” theology and refuses anti-medicine spirituality. James 5:14–16 and Colossians 4:14 allow prayer and physicians. Ephesians 2:8–9 guards grace. “Fly free” here is freedom from disease’s entanglement of mind, body, and business under God’s purpose — encourage diligence without promising identical medical outcomes for every reader.

## Takeaways

1. **Accept presence of the disease.** Truth before treatment path.
2. **Faith beyond self-control.** God larger than the ordeal.
3. **Healing can be gradual through gifted people.** Chain placed on purpose.
4. **Not merit — purpose.** Healed to do present calling.
5. **Hope fuels diligence; faith plus medicine; victory.** Mind, body, business untangled; develop faith for your moment too.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
He accepted cancer’s truth, trusted God, received doctors as purposeful gifts, was healed for God’s purpose rather than personal deserving, and through faith and medical care moved from hopelessness to flying free.

### Does Dean pit faith against doctors?
No — he thanks both faith provided by God and professional medical technology.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 5:14–16** — Prayer and anointing.
- **Exodus 15:26** — The Lord who heals.
- **Ephesians 2:8–9** — Grace not works.
- **Romans 5:5** — Hope not ashamed.
- **Colossians 4:14** — Luke the physician.

### A simple practice
If you face illness or recovery: write the true diagnosis line, one prayer of trust, and one medical recommendation you will follow diligently this week. Thank one caregiver by name.
