# Combat Truth Turns Trials into Victory

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 19 links cockpit honesty in Vietnam to civilian torment later. Survival demanded total truthfulness about aircraft limits — not movie scripts. The same realism works trials at home into experience, then victory. Dean poses the dividing question: truth versus dream.

This lesson is combat epistemology applied to life trials.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Truth-telling about limits is humility; fantasy heroics destroy. Scripture prefers sober judgment and learning through testing.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Survival required gripping real limits | Sober judgment (Romans 12:3); the battle is the Lord’s yet David still chose stones (1 Samuel 17) |
| Total truthfulness with self | Speak truth in your heart (Psalm 15:2); examine yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5) |
| Movie dream ≠ combat reality | Desire without knowledge not good (Proverbs 19:2) |
| Divide truth from dream | Test everything (1 Thessalonians 5:21); buy truth (Proverbs 23:23) |
| Trials → experience → victory | Suffering produces endurance, character, hope (Romans 5:3–4); count it joy (James 1:2–4) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Two hundred missions and honest limits

I flew more than 200 combat missions in Vietnam and realized early on that there was only one way to survive. I had to come to grips with myself and decide what I could and could not do with the airplane. I had to be totally truthful with myself and sometimes that was not easy to do. There were times when I wanted to do something that I may have seen in a movie but realistically knew could not be done in the real combat environment.

What is the truth and how do you come to divide truth from a dream?

The trials I experienced in combat were not too different than the ones I discovered were tormenting me later at home. There was a requirement to find the best method of working through the problem realistically and then gaining knowledge from the experience. The trials eventually provided experience, which I could use later to find a victory.

> **Scholar sidebar — Victory is downstream of realism**
> Dean’s sequence is trials → realistic method → knowledge → experience → victory. Romans 5:3–4 matches the chain without romanticizing war. Psalm 15:2 underwrites costly self-truth. The movie line protects readers from glamorous false limits in spiritual or financial “combat.”

## Takeaways

1. **200+ missions taught one survival rule.** Know real aircraft limits.
2. **Self-truth is hard and necessary.** Easy lies kill.
3. **Movies are not tactics manuals.** Wanted moves can be unreal.
4. **Home trials rhyme with combat trials.** Same need for realism.
5. **Trials can become later victory.** Through experience gained honestly.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Combat survival required total honesty about what he and the airplane could do — not movie dreams — and the same realistic path turns home trials into experience and victory.

### What question must you answer?
What is the truth, and how do you divide it from a dream?

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Romans 12:3** — Sober judgment.
- **Psalm 15:2** — Truth in the heart.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:21** — Test everything.
- **Romans 5:3–4** — Endurance, character, hope.
- **James 1:2–4** — Testing and steadfastness.

### A simple practice
Name one “movie move” you are tempted to try in a current problem. Replace it with one realistic next action within your actual limits this week.
