# Decide Faith Is Primary Before Crisis

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 19 moves from metaphor to timing of decision: do not wait until the cloud to decide whether gauges matter. Faith must be primary instrument *before* the problem if endurance and return to normalcy are the aim. Low confidence feelings do not cancel trained trust.

This lesson is preloaded faith — preparation spirituality.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture repeatedly urges building the house before the storm and storing oil before the night. Dean applies that to faith-as-instrument.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Decide faith’s primacy before crisis | Build on rock before rain (Matthew 7:24–27) |
| Faith enables endurance belief | Count it joy; testing produces steadfastness (James 1:2–4) |
| Trust developed when references cut off | Though He slay me, yet will I trust (Job 13:15); walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7) |
| Regain normalcy through trained trust | God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3–4); peace of God (Philippians 4:6–7) |
| Feeling ≠ required high confidence | We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7); hope against hope (Romans 4:18–21) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Preload the panel

You must determine before a crisis occurs that your faith will be the primary instrument you can use to carry you through any problem.

Faith is important if you are going to believe you can successfully endure your problem. In the airplane it is essential to develop that trust in the gauges because they provide the necessary information to get you home when you are cut off from the normal references that you use for maneuvering. The same trust has to be developed in your faith to help you regain a level of normalcy in life when you are in the midst of a problem. The feeling you have when going through a crisis may not be exactly one of high confidence, but if you rely on your training and your trust, you can safely get back to a secure life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Primary means ranked first, not felt strongest**
> Dean allows low-confidence feeling while demanding pre-ranked trust. Matthew 7:24–27 is the structural parallel: decide the foundation before rain. James 1:2–4 ties endurance to tested faith. “Training and trust” keeps spiritual disciplines in view without reducing faith to technique alone.

## Takeaways

1. **Before crisis, decide.** Faith as primary instrument is a pre-commitment.
2. **Endurance needs belief that endurance is possible.** Faith underwrites that belief.
3. **Gauges get you home when visuals die.** Developed trust, not last-second invention.
4. **Faith aims at regained normalcy.** Not forever adrenaline spirituality.
5. **Low confidence can coexist with safe return.** Training + trust > mood.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Decide before crisis that faith is your primary instrument — develop that trust now so when normal references vanish you can endure and return toward secure life even without high-confidence feelings.

### Why “before”?
Because the cloud is a bad classroom for first learning whether the panel is trustworthy.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Matthew 7:24–27** — Rock before rain.
- **James 1:2–4** — Steadfastness through testing.
- **2 Corinthians 5:7** — Faith not sight.
- **Job 13:15** — Trust in extremity.
- **Philippians 4:6–7** — Peace in the midst.

### A simple practice
Write a one-sentence pre-commitment: “When crisis hits, my primary instrument is faith in God shown by ___.” Schedule one weekly habit (Scripture, prayer, wise counsel) that trains that instrument.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *When should you decide faith is primary? Do you need high confidence in crisis? How is faith like trusting gauges?*
