# Instruments and Faith When in the Clouds

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 19’s aviation heart: instrument flight in cloud. Dean links doubting gauges to losing control, then maps the panel onto God — when crisis removes ordinary outside references, faith is what keeps life straight and level. Imagination without trust invents fatal scenarios.

This lesson is the core metaphor block for trials-to-victory.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Trusting what is true when feelings and visibility fail is central to biblical faith. Dean’s cockpit picture serves that doctrine without replacing Scripture with aviation.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Doubt of true indicators loses control | O you of little faith (Matthew 14:30–31); double-minded instability (James 1:6–8) |
| Faith assists when we believe God | Trust in the Lord with all your heart (Proverbs 3:5–6) |
| No outside reference still requires guidance | Word is a lamp to feet (Psalm 119:105); walk by faith not sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) |
| Imagination invents scenarios in the blank | Take thoughts captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) |
| God keeps you straight and level in bad times | He leads me in paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3); peace that guards (Philippians 4:6–7) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Gauges in the soup; God in the blank

As a pilot, when you doubt your instruments it is easy to lose control. Faith provides the same assistance to us when we believe in God. Without it I was losing control.

One of the toughest assignments for a pilot in the clouds is to understand what is real and what is imagined when referencing the instruments in the cockpit. When you are flying in the clouds with no reference to your relationship to the ground, you have no choice except to rely on the instruments to keep the airplane right side up. You must maintain faith in the indicators that will help you safely move forward toward your intended destination.

As you concentrate on the instrument panel and there is no reference outside the cockpit, you can imagine all kinds of scenarios. To be a successful instrument pilot you must have faith in the instruments. To be successful in life when outside inputs are taken from your view and you feel completely alone, you have to have faith in God. He is your instrument to keep you on the straight and level through your bad times.

> **Scholar sidebar — Real vs imagined under the hood**
> Dean’s IFR lesson is epistemological: feelings invent banks and turns that are not there. James 1:6–8 and 2 Corinthians 10:5 underwrite stable trust and captive thoughts. Proverbs 3:5–6 and Psalm 119:105 name the true panel. God-as-instrument is metaphor for reliable guidance — not reducing God to a gadget.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Doubt the true panel → lose control.** Aviation and soul both.
2. **Faith assists when we believe God.** Parallel assistance, not gimmick.
3. **Clouds erase ground reference.** Only instruments keep wings level.
4. **Imagination fills the blank dangerously.** Scenarios multiply without trust.
5. **God is the instrument in lonely bad times.** Straight and level through trial.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Like an instrument pilot who must trust gauges in cloud with no outside view, in crisis when life’s outside inputs vanish you must trust God to keep you straight and level.

### Why is imagination a problem in cloud?
Because without a trusted panel, invented scenarios feel like reality and you fight the airplane — or your life — the wrong way.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 3:5–6** — Trust; straight paths.
- **2 Corinthians 5:7** — Faith not sight.
- **James 1:6–8** — Unstable doubt.
- **2 Corinthians 10:5** — Capture thoughts.
- **Psalm 119:105** — Word as lamp.

### A simple practice
When anxiety invents a scenario, write “FEELING” vs “PANEL” (Scripture, known fact, wise counsel). Fly the panel for 24 hours: one obedient next step only.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
