# Interpret God's Signals and Believe

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 19:** Trials Can Lead to Victory – Look Beyond the Horizon
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 19 presses from metaphor to gospel content. Believing instruments means reacting to truth; wanting a different reality does not bank the airplane. Likewise God’s signals in crisis must be read truly. Dean names the primary instrument explicitly: faith that Christ died for your sins — heart belief and mouth confession.

This lesson is interpretation plus the salvation core Paul simplifies.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s “believe heart / say mouth” tracks Romans’ salvation summary. Want-versus-reality is moral and practical wisdom throughout Scripture.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Believe true indicators and react | Be doers of the word (James 1:22) |
| Lives depend on correct interpretation | My people destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6) |
| Want ≠ reality | Desire without knowledge is not good (Proverbs 19:2); truth frees (John 8:32) |
| God’s signals can guide to safe landing | Your ears hear a word behind you (Isaiah 30:21); Spirit guides into truth (John 16:13) |
| Believe heart; confess Christ died for sins; saved | Romans 10:9–10; Christ died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Truth on the panel; gospel as primary gauge

As a pilot I had to believe that the instruments were telling me the truth and then react to the information they provided to guide the airplane. My life and the lives of my passengers literally depended upon the correct interpretation of that information. When flying, it became necessary to understand what I could and could not realistically do as a pilot. There is always a great difference between what we want to do and what is reality. Your correct interpretation of the signals God is providing you in a crisis may also provide you with the ability to get to a safe landing. Your faith that Christ died for your sins is the primary instrument to verify the strength of your conviction. Paul actually says that it is simple. “If you believe in your heart and say with your mouth that Christ died for your sins, you will be saved.”

> **Scholar sidebar — Primary instrument has content**
> Dean will not leave “faith” as vague optimism. Romans 10:9–10 and 1 Corinthians 15:3 supply the confession’s substance. Want-versus-reality protects readers from fantasy “landings.” Interpretation without reaction fails James 1:22 — believe the panel, then move the controls.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Believe the true reading, then react.** Information unused saves no one.
2. **Others’ lives may ride with yours.** Interpretation is weighty.
3. **Want and reality diverge.** Pilots and disciples must know the difference.
4. **God’s crisis signals can guide landing.** Interpretation is pastoral skill under stress.
5. **Primary instrument: Christ died for your sins.** Heart belief and mouth confession; saved.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Treat God’s signals like true instruments — want is not reality — and take as primary instrument the simple faith that Christ died for your sins, believed in the heart and confessed with the mouth.

### Is this only for pilots in trouble?
No — Dean universalizes safe landing through correct gospel trust in any crisis.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Romans 10:9–10** — Believe and confess.
- **1 Corinthians 15:3** — Christ died for our sins.
- **James 1:22** — Doers of the word.
- **John 8:32** — Truth frees.
- **Isaiah 30:21** — Word behind you guiding.

### A simple practice
Write what you *want* the crisis to mean versus what is *real* today. Then pray Romans 10:9–10 in your own words and name one obedient reaction to truth you will take.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
