# Act; Waiting Only Worsens the Crisis

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 20:** A Moment to Act – Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 20’s title is the point: a moment to act. Dean states the cost of delay and the gains of proper action.

This lesson is the take-proper-action transfer from spin recovery to life crisis.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture urges timely obedience, redeemed time, and doing what you know to do rather than drifting while trouble grows.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Hope for outside fix without acting | Faith without works is dead (James 2:17) |
| Avoid necessary moves | Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin (James 4:17) |
| Waiting worsens the crisis | Redeem the time (Ephesians 5:15–16) |
| Acting sharpens skill and assurance | Train yourself for godliness (1 Timothy 4:7–8) |
| Necessary action begins recovery | The hand of the diligent makes rich (Proverbs 10:4); prepare minds for action (1 Peter 1:13) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Take proper action

One of the lessons I have learned from watching people in crisis is that they seem to hope for outside influence to correct the situation. They often avoid taking the actions necessary to begin moving toward a satisfactory conclusion. People must make the move to take proper action when they are in a crisis. If they wait, then the crisis only continues to develop and worsens. If they act, however, there is a quicker solution to the problem, problem-solving skills are sharpened, there is an increased sense of self-assurance, and heightened self-esteem. Just like recovery from a spin in an airplane, there is necessary action to begin the process of recovery.

> **Scholar sidebar — Delay is not neutral**
> James 2:17 and 4:17 make neglected action a spiritual issue, not mere preference. Ephesians 5:16 prices time. Dean’s list of benefits (quicker solution, skill, assurance, esteem) is observational fruit of obedience — not a prosperity formula. Keep the spin line: recovery has necessary moves.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Outside-hope pattern.** People wait for influence to correct the mess.
2. **Avoidance.** Needed actions get postponed.
3. **Wait worsens.** Crisis develops further when you stall.
4. **Act gains.** Faster solution, sharper skills, more assurance and esteem.
5. **Spin parallel.** Recovery begins only with necessary action.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Hoping someone else will fix the crisis while you avoid action lets trouble worsen; taking proper action speeds solution and builds skill and self-assurance — like spin recovery.

### What does waiting cost?
A developing, worsening crisis and delayed recovery.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 2:17** — Faith with works.
- **James 4:17** — Know and do.
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Redeem the time.
- **1 Peter 1:13** — Ready minds.
- **1 Timothy 4:7–8** — Train.

### A simple practice
Name one action you have delayed more than a week. Do the smallest irreversible step today (call, form, apology, appointment).
