## Context for the Reader

Chapter 20 grounds action-faith in Israel’s David: early appeal for support and Goliath courage under the Lord’s battle.

This lesson holds the two citations Dean quotes.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s own verses lead: the Lord as support in disaster and the battle as the Lord’s — courage without self-reliant swagger.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Lord was my support in disaster | 1 Samuel 22:19 (Dean’s citation); God is our refuge (Psalm 46:1) |
| Actively seek help earlier rather than later | Seek the Lord while he may be found (Isaiah 55:6) |
| Consult the Lord when tested | In all your ways acknowledge him (Proverbs 3:5–6) |
| Not afraid of the giant with God | The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1) |
| Battle is the Lord’s | 1 Samuel 17:47 (Dean’s citation) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Support and the giant

In the Bible David says, in 1 Samuel 22:19 (NIV), “They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support.” Essentially, the biblical David was saying that he had actively sought support from the Lord and the Lord came through. David was asking the Lord to help him solve the problem earlier rather than later. He desired a solution and found a way to look ahead. King David was great at solving problems but made it a practice to consult the Lord. He did it when he was tested by Goliath. He wasn’t afraid to take on a giant when he had the Lord on his side.

1 Samuel 17:47 (NIV): “And everyone will know that the LORD does not need weapons to rescue his people. It is His battle, not ours. The LORD will give you to us!”

> **Scholar sidebar — Note on the citation**
> Dean attributes the disaster-support line to 1 Samuel 22:19 (NIV) in his text — keep his citation as he printed it for excerpt fidelity; readers can study parallel Davidic support language in the Psalms and Samuel narrative. 1 Samuel 17:47 remains the Goliath pillar: the battle is the Lord’s. Courage is consultation plus trust, not weapon pride.

## Takeaways

1. **Support in disaster.** Lord came through when David sought Him.
2. **Earlier rather than later.** Active ask; look ahead.
3. **Consult as practice.** Problem-solving included the Lord.
4. **Goliath courage.** Not afraid with God on his side.
5. **His battle.** 1 Samuel 17:47 — Lord rescues; battle not ours alone.
