# Faith Looks Forward and Gives Hope

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 20:** A Moment to Act – Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 20’s subtitle is Use Faith. After rejecting rearview waste, Dean defines faith’s forward vector and the turn to God when hope empties.

This lesson is the faith-gift / higher-power hinge before the Eberly story.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Biblical faith trusts God’s character, hopes in what is not seen, and refuses despair’s isolation from the future.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Faith is God’s gift to humans | By grace you have been saved through faith… gift of God (Ephesians 2:8–9) |
| Faith looks forward, not back | Faith is assurance of things hoped for (Hebrews 11:1) |
| Faith fuels action and hope | Faith working through love (Galatians 5:6) |
| When worldly hope runs out | May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing (Romans 15:13) |
| God is faithful and omnipotent | He who calls you is faithful (1 Thessalonians 5:24); nothing is too hard for the Lord (Jeremiah 32:17) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Gift that faces forward

One of greatest gifts God has given every human being is the ability to have faith in Him. Faith can be used to look forward rather than back in your life. Faith avoids waste when you are solving a problem. Faith provides the incentive to take action and develop hope.

When all hope runs out in the world it becomes apparent that we must go to a higher power. It is at that moment we often can realize that God is faithful and omnipotent. If you have no hope, you suddenly find yourself isolated from the future. God can provide that hope.

> **Scholar sidebar — Higher power is not last resort superstition**
> Dean’s “higher power” language lands on the faithful, omnipotent God — keep Hebrews 11:1 and Romans 15:13 primary. Isolation from the future is despair’s geography; God reopens the future. Faith here is incentive to act, not passive wish.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Gift of faith.** God gives humans ability to trust Him.
2. **Forward vector.** Faith looks ahead rather than back.
3. **Anti-waste.** Faith steadies problem-solving energy.
4. **Action and hope.** Faith incentivizes moves and hope.
5. **When hope runs out.** God’s faithfulness meets isolation from the future.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Faith in God is a gift that looks forward, reduces waste, drives action and hope — and when worldly hope ends, the faithful omnipotent God can supply hope again.

### What happens when hope runs out?
Isolation from the future — and the turn to God who can provide hope.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Hebrews 11:1** — Assurance of things hoped for.
- **Ephesians 2:8–9** — Faith as gift.
- **Romans 15:13** — God of hope.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:24** — He is faithful.
- **Galatians 5:6** — Faith working through love.

### A simple practice
Write one place worldly hope has run out. Beside it write one forward act of faith (prayer, obedience step, ask for counsel) you will take today.
