# Do You Own a Piano?

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 20 turns aspiration into action. Dean’s friend cuts through years of talk with one question about tools.

This lesson is the piano analogy — dream without instrument is not training.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Wisdom counts cost, prepares, and works diligently; desire without labor remains empty.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Years of talk without tools | The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor (Proverbs 21:25) |
| Own the instrument to practice | Count the cost before building (Luke 14:28–30) |
| Plan and tools to execute | The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance (Proverbs 21:5) |
| Preparation requires practice | Train yourself for godliness (1 Timothy 4:7–8) |
| Worry and dream without action | Be doers of the word (James 1:22) |

## Dean's excerpt

### The friend’s question

I once heard an analogy about a guy who said he wanted to learn to play the piano and became despondent about having lived more than sixty years on earth and he had never learned to play. He loved the piano and talked to people about his aspiration for many years. In one of these conversations with a friend, our guy again expressed his desire to be a great pianist. The friend asked a simple question that started him on the road to satisfying his dream of having musical knowledge enough to play the piano. He knew the man well enough to get to the point quickly and he asked, “Do you own a piano?” The answer was a very simple “no.”

How much practicing can be done to become a pianist unless we have the instrument to make the avocation a reality? We must put a plan in place and also obtain the necessary tools to execute the plan. Taking proper action to reach a desired goal requires preparation and preparation requires practice. You can sit around and worry, stew, and dream but none of that makes a difference unless you take action.

> **Scholar sidebar — Tools before tribute concerts**
> Luke 14:28–30 and Proverbs 21 keep cost-counting and diligence together. Dean is not shaming poverty of means; he is shaming aspiration without the next concrete tool and plan. The friend’s love was blunt clarity.

## Takeaways

1. **Sixty years of longing.** Desire without path becomes despondency.
2. **“Do you own a piano?”** Friend’s simple question started the road.
3. **Answer: no.** No instrument, no practice runway.
4. **Plan + tools.** Execution needs both strategy and means.
5. **Worry ≠ progress.** Stew and dream change nothing without action.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
You cannot practice piano without a piano — goals need plan, tools, preparation, and practice; worry and dream alone change nothing.

### What started the man’s road?
A friend’s pointed question: “Do you own a piano?”

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Luke 14:28–30** — Count the cost.
- **Proverbs 21:5, 25** — Diligence vs idle desire.
- **James 1:22** — Doers.
- **1 Timothy 4:7–8** — Practice/train.
- **Proverbs 16:3** — Commit work to the Lord.

### A simple practice
Name one goal you only talk about. List the missing “piano” (tool, skill, appointment, budget line). Acquire or schedule that one item this week.
