# Soul in God’s Hand; James on Trials

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 20:** A Moment to Act – Use Faith
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 20 gathers Eberly, biblical David, and James: trust placement, directed battle, and trials that mature faith.

This lesson holds the hollow-of-the-hand line and the full James quote Dean gives.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

James teaches joy in trials because testing produces perseverance and maturity; wisdom is asked from a generous God without double-minded doubt.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Soul trusted in God’s hand | Into your hand I commit my spirit (Psalm 31:5); the Lord is your keeper (Psalm 121:5) |
| Follow God’s direction; self-led battles falter | Trust in the Lord… and he will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5–6) |
| Tests build perseverance | James 1:2–4 (Dean’s citation) |
| Ask God for wisdom generously | James 1:5 (Dean’s citation) |
| Ask believing, not doubting like a wave | James 1:6 (Dean’s citation) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Hand, direction, and James

The bottom line is that my friend David Eberly came through the trials because he put his *soul in the hollow of God’s hand.* He trusted the Lord and followed God’s instructions. The biblical David did the same thing when he adhered to the direction that God took him. When David went into battles on his own accord, things didn’t go as well. Maybe there is a lesson there for us as well. Through many tests we will find strength because the tests provide the building of perseverance.

The Bible actually says that we are going to be stronger when we go through tests. James 1:2-6 (NIV) says,

*Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.*

> **Scholar sidebar — Joy is not denial of pain**
> Keep James 1:2–6 as Dean’s block quote — primary text. “Hollow of God’s hand” is trust language parallel to Psalm 31:5. Self-directed battles failing is Proverbs 3:5–6 applied. Perseverance finishing its work is maturity, not macho stoicism.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Hollow of God’s hand.** Eberly’s trust placement through trials.
2. **Follow instructions.** Direction adhered; not self-authored war only.
3. **Own-accord warning.** David’s self-led battles went worse.
4. **Tests build strength.** Perseverance is constructed under trial.
5. **James 1:2–6.** Joy, perseverance, maturity, wisdom without doubt-waves.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Eberly and biblical David came through by entrusting the soul to God’s hand and following His direction; James 1:2–6 says trials build perseverance and wisdom is asked in undoubting faith.

### What if we fight only on our own accord?
Dean notes David’s battles went less well — a lesson to adhere to God’s direction.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 1:2–6** — Trials, perseverance, wisdom.
- **Psalm 31:5** — Commit spirit into His hand.
- **Proverbs 3:5–6** — Trust; straight paths.
- **Psalm 121:5** — The Lord is your keeper.
- **Romans 5:3–4** — Suffering produces endurance.

### A simple practice
Pray James 1:5 for one decision. Write what “not doubting like a wave” would look like in your next step — then take that step.
