# Cancer Couch: Give Up or Fight

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 21:** Check Ride – Testing Your Faith!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This short chapter is the emotional low of Dean’s cancer journey and the model of filing a personal flight plan with God. Slice only what he wrote.

This lesson is the opening couch scene — the life-or-death question before the prayer.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture makes room for despair’s honesty while calling the downcast soul to hope in God.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Too sick and depressed to produce | The Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) |
| Alone afternoon contemplation | Pour out your heart before him (Psalm 62:8) |
| Self-pity and the give-up question | Why are you cast down, O my soul? Hope in God (Psalm 42:5) |
| Basic question; life-and-death weight | I have set before you life and death… choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19) |
| Fight against deadly disease | Spirit of power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Afternoon on the couch

During recovery from my first cancer surgery, I was too sick to work and too depressed to be productive. One afternoon while Vickie was at work and the kids were at school I sat on our couch and contemplated what I should do with my life. I was feeling sorry for myself and questioned if I should give up or continue to fight this deadly disease.

It sounds like a pretty basic question, but the answer at that point in my treatment was a matter of life and death. It was a very difficult afternoon; I was bombarded by doubts about my self-worth.

> **Scholar sidebar — Name the low without polish**
> Dean’s check-ride begins in depression, not triumph. Psalm 42:5 and 34:18 hold cast-down souls near God. Do not invent medical detail. The “basic” question carrying life-and-death weight is the chapter’s doorway to surrender in the next lessons.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Post-surgery wreckage.** Too sick to work; too depressed to produce.
2. **Couch alone.** Vickie at work; kids at school.
3. **Life question.** What should I do with my life?
4. **Give up or fight.** Self-pity met a deadly disease.
5. **Life and death.** Basic wording; ultimate stakes.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
After first cancer surgery he sat alone on the couch too sick and depressed to produce, asking whether to give up or keep fighting — a basic question with life-and-death weight.

### Is this the whole chapter?
No — it is the opening beat before control-failure, prayer, and observed recovery.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 42:5** — Hope in God when cast down.
- **Psalm 34:18** — Near to the brokenhearted.
- **Psalm 62:8** — Pour out your heart.
- **Deuteronomy 30:19** — Choose life.
- **2 Timothy 1:7** — Power, love, self-control.

### A simple practice
If you are in a low, write the honest question you are afraid to say aloud. Pray Psalm 42:5 over it once. Tell one safe person you are on the “couch.”

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Where does chapter 21’s check ride begin? What question did Dean ask on the couch?*
