# On My Knees: God, Take Control

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 21:** Check Ride – Testing Your Faith!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This is the chapter’s core check-ride moment: filing the personal flight plan with God in desperate surrender.

This lesson is the prayer text and the claim that change required God’s help.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Surrender prayer matches denying self, casting cares, and yielding lordship to God who actually holds control.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Cannot change without God’s help | Apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5) |
| Knees; desperate prayer | Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God (1 Peter 5:6–7) |
| I am not in control | The Lord reigns (Psalm 97:1); not my will, but yours (Luke 22:42) |
| Take control of me, situation, future | Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him (Psalm 37:5) |
| Obstacles removed in God’s timing | With God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26) |

## Dean's excerpt

### The desperate prayer

I determined that I could not change the situation without God’s help. I got down on my knees and said in a desperate prayer, “God, I have messed up everything and I am not in control. Would you please take control?” I actually prayed that He would take control of me, the situation, and my future. There is no verifiable timetable on how long it took but, I can tell you, it was not long before some very incredible things started taking place in my life. The obstacles that had seemed insurmountable were removed one by one.

> **Scholar sidebar — Flight plan filed**
> Editorial framing called this filing a personal flight plan with God — the prayer is the filing. John 15:5 and Luke 22:42 keep dependence and yielded will. Dean refuses a verifiable timetable yet testifies to sequential obstacle removal. Keep his three objects of control: me, situation, future.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Need God’s help.** Self-change was not enough.
2. **Knees.** Body posture matched desperate prayer.
3. **Messed up; not in control.** Confession without spin.
4. **Take control — three spheres.** Me, situation, and future handed over.
5. **Obstacles one by one.** Incredible change without a published timetable.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
He concluded he could not change the situation without God, knelt, and prayed for God to take control of him, the situation, and his future — then insurmountable obstacles began to be removed.

### What are the three control objects in the prayer?
Himself, the situation, and his future.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **1 Peter 5:6–7** — Humble yourselves; cast cares.
- **John 15:5** — Apart from Me nothing.
- **Luke 22:42** — Not my will.
- **Psalm 37:5** — Commit your way.
- **Psalm 97:1** — The Lord reigns.
- **Matthew 19:26** — With God all things possible.

### A simple practice
Kneel if able. Pray Dean’s three lines in your own words: I am not in control; take me; take this situation; take my future. Write one obstacle you will stop gripping as if you alone must move it.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What did Dean pray on his knees in cancer? What does “take control” include?*
